i'd rather have all the control and 10x faster shifts that a true semi-automatic transmission brings, thanks
Just to avoid further confusion, most people call those "sequential manuals." A semi-automatic just brings to mind a normal automatic tranny with option for a "manual mode."

Edit: Oh and, yea, I'd rather have a sequential manual with buttons or paddles mounted on the steering column, thanks.

they called them semi-automatic for years in F1 with no problem.
Ok, then tell the automobile industry to stop referring to their transmissions as semi-automatic unless it has a solenoid operated clutch.

BMW's SMG also has a full auto mode which drives like an automatic.

A semi-automatic transmission IS a manual transmisson. You still have control over the gear shifts, it's just that the computer shifts it much faster than any human can. I can't think of ANY downsides of it. If you want to drive for "yourself" leave it in manual mode. If you're stuck in traffic, leave it in auto mode and let it take care of EVERYTHING for you. Besides, it's less of a hassle, the paddles are behind the steering wheels, and it accelerates faster than a normal manual. What's not to like?
Oh, I didn't know that. I thought he was referring to the kind of shifter you have in the automatic version of the g35. Is there a clutch in the floor, and a shifter in the center console, or is all the shifting done behind the steering wheel?
Look at the Ferrari 360 Modena's F1 system, the BMW M3's SMG, or Toyota's SMT on the MR2 Spyder. Semi-automatic transmissions are manual trannies with a computer operated clutch. There is no clutch pedal on the floor; just gas and brake. You change gears either with paddles behind the steering wheel or with a shifter in the usual place that is simply tapped forward for an upshift or back for a downshift. You don't have to left off the gas when shifting either, just mash the gas and shift. It automatically matches the revvs for you. **Note** These aren't like those faker "manual shift" auto transmissions (ala Tiptronic, Sport Shift, AutoStick, etc). Those are actually slushboxes with torque convertors that still rob power. They allows you to shift manually, but it isn't the same.

Sounds neet :p I woudl love that - no more worrying about eating up my clutch! :p

Semi-automatic, semi-manual, who cares? I just want a car that will get me laid! ;)

Seriously.. it's about time they introduced the manual. I don't see why they didn't release it with a manual before. I've seen maybe 5 G35 sedans around Austin, and I'm pretty sure it's because of auto only. It really hurt the launch.

Where did you hear about the faster acceleration? Maybe if the computer was picking shift points and was shifting for you...

My cousin ordered an automatic one of these. Delivery isn't until April though.

no, you still pick the shift points, but think about what you do when you shift a manual. press the clutch in, find the gear, foot off clutch and onto gas. the best drivers do it in 1/10th of a second. a semi-automatic can do it in 1/100th or 1/1000th of a second.

i've never seen a sportshift type automatic transmission called a semiautomatic. i've seen them called manumatic very often in the press.

They call them semiautomatic in the UK magazine, Car.

I don't agree at all that even a true semi-auto manual (like BMW's SMG or Ferrari's F1) has no disadvantages vs. a regular manual tranny. Launches are more problematic (other than the launch-control mode on non-US M3s with SMG, which is so damaging to the clutch that it can only be used a handful of times with each clutch before it self-disables), there is ultimately less control than a car with a manual clutch, and the tranny is worlds more complex and prone to failure. Also, the BMW SMG seems to be the only one that does not enact a performance penalty (look, e.g., at the 0-60 times for an MR2 with sequential manual - it is something like 2 seconds slower than the stick). Also, true SMGs are very poor in full-auto mode, and provide a clunky, jarring drive when driven as automatics.

The bottom line is that I would rather drive a car with a stick than an automatic or semi-automatic even if it came at a performance cost (which it doesn't), because I find it a more fun, satisfying driving experience. To each his own.

I really want semi-automatic transmission for my next car because it seems to offer the best of both worlds. I don't want to keep shifting manually when in city traffic!
It seems to work very well - I saw it in action today when we went out to lunch in my boss' new Maserati. I believe the mazda RX-8 also has this.. Is there a list anywhere of all the cars with this available? Most of the ones I've seen are beyond my budget!

control? what kinda control? bladder???
I think you want a clutchless manual... a true electronic sequential tranny like in the M3 or a Ferrari... totally not the same as a semi-auto.
And semi-auto is pretty useless on a road course let's put it that way... I'd rather have the six speed since I KNOW it will hold a gear and I can skip gears too.

And yes, even then most clutchless manuals like even the 0-shift-time direct tranny of the new Audis you'll need a launch control of some kind just like Vito said (for the strip). Still it's preferable to the shiftable slushboxes that incurr the power drain of most autos.

I have to note that the MR2's SMG is vastly inferior to what other manufacturers are bringing to the table. It's shifting takes nearly second. I double clutch and shift in almost the same time.
