my stock fan on albatron ti4200 128mb plain-jane card was starting to make noises again. it may have been because of my system overworking a 200watt PS that finally called it quits, but i digress.

i took out the fan, i had an extra cpu heatsink that i attached using AS3. of course it wouldn't stay on since it would have been upside down with my tower right side up. so i cut up a wooden chopstick so that it would brace it perfectly against the heatsink and my internal modem 3 pci slots down. turned it on worked fine, except that the heatsink would get pretty hot within minutes stock speeds.

hmm, so then i used the cpu fan and placed it so that it would blow at the side of heatsink and would blow out the hot air at the back of my case. i taped it on the heatsink and the fan is sitting on my internal modem itself. i already took out the metal pci slots so there was sufficient air flow. now i could run my card 305/290 stable, as opposed to 290/290 running stock heatsink/fan. if only i had a digital camera to show yah. maybe ill get a webcam i believe it can take pictures. but if you could picture it, its a beautiful thing. heheh

Pics???

Damn, tape, and modded chopsticks? Your worse than me.... :p LOL

Way to take some initative, just be careful that heatsink doesn't fall off, if you want it permanant, you can put a few small drops of superglue on the edges to hold it on for good ;)

hey curt, saw from different post that you also used a cpu heatsink fan combo on you gpu. how did you get the HS to stay attached without any "chopsticks"? you used superglue?? anyways, don't want to make it too permanent just in case i need some of those covered pci slots. maybe ill redo this post in future when i get some way to get some pix

well, i believe thermal adhesive is permanent, and i don't think im willing to make it permanent just yet since i may need those pci slots. also its a cpu heatsink which is pretty big for a video card and i don't want to put the stress on the gpu to hold up the HS when it'll be upside down. rather have no stress on the card by bracing it between the video card and another pci card.

Did you come up with the HS idea for the FX? ;) What you did is pretty much what the FX does, by blowing the hot air out of the case, which is pretty cool. The way I see it, it's Your machine, have fun with it.

Yeah if I ever need the 2 PCIs beside the card, I'm pretty much screwed, but I have 3 others, and just one Nic, so it's all good.

Sounds like a kewl mod, please post some pics when you get the camera.

nah, not from FX. i originally wanted to just run the HS passively, but it was running pretty hot even with the big ole HS. and i could'nt put the fan ontop of the HS since i won't be able to brace it. alright, im either gonna try and borrow camera somewhere or if not buy a webcam. when i do ill post a new post instead of on this one. lates.
