i have NEVER run above 43c, and thats at full load...past 2 days have been so hot here (80-90's) and i still dont have my swamp-cooler heeked up yet...its damn hot in here....think i will be ok to leave sys on 24/7, at this high temp?

I dont see why people get so paranoid, 55c isnt that hot, you can touch it and not burn yourself.

kinda warm if your case has good cooling it shouldent be that high. check you heat sink for dust. i found a tone on mine and when i cleaned it temp dropped like 8 C

worry about 55c???!!!!......well, when you come from 43c to 55+.....thats some sh*t to worry about!!!...i have never run this high, and i have no idea how it will react.......i have been on since i posted this...all seems fine, but damn...im still at 52c...that is almost 10c higher then i ever run....as to why i worry.....is not the 60c range when you get into trouble?

60º get into trouble?...yeah that's pushin' it but don't think that once it hits that temp your CPU goes 'poof.' That's just a guideline. The SK-6 is a great HS but tends to collect dust in the narrow fins. You may wanna check that and blow it clean as TheEvil1 mentioned.

yea trust me it will work i teh first time i checked mine for dust i must have taken like a cup of dust outof the heat sink alone. stupid college dorms way to dusty.

I'm running at 60 average now on my Gigabyte 7VRXP and Athlon 1800+. Brand new and using the supplied heatsink. Mind you my computer is in a poorly ventilated area, but I can't figure why it is running so hot. I'm reapplied grease and the heatsink several times and no luck, so I'm going to be ordering a new heatsink, probably a coolmaster. Any recommendations for cooling, price, and quietness?

According to AMD's own website the Athlon should be fine up to 90, but that's the temp taken from the top of the processor. I've run up to 70C with no instability. Still, it's too hot for me.

MAX operating temperature is 90C without damage. They don't say it'll be stable at that temperature. 🙂

The stock heatsink and fan on an Athlon is usually either a coolermaster or a taisol, already a decent unit. Changing the heatsink probably isn't going to significantly drop your temperatures, if at all (and every time you remove the heatsink, you risk cracking the core, and the more times you do it, the more likely that the next time will be it).

More likely you need to improve ventilation of your case. Just sticking an exhaust fan behind the processor can make a huge difference (dropped my temps by 4 or 5 degrees C). Even undervolting the fan, it probably just needs a little bit of an airflow and boom, cooler. However with such high temps, I'm assuming the environment is already pretty warm, so there's a limit to how low you can go.

Is 60 deg C too hot for my AthlonXP 2100 on an ASUS AV7333? This is just in the bios and the case is not even closed yet. I can't get WinXP to install, I get to variuos points and everything shuts off. I'm thinking the proc is getting too hot and the asus C.O.P (cpu overheating protection) is shutting down the system. It is a 300W ps. I am at a loss here, this is a brand new barebones system from mwave in a enlight EN-7237 case.

I had a AV7266E idleing at 55c. Asus reads temps bit higher than most boards so 60 is not bad.

When installing XP, do you see a blue screen when it stops??

Why dont you turn off the cpu protection in the BIOS and see if that helps.

have u tried hooking up the hard drive to the VIA channels instead of HPT??

I haven't seen the blue screen, i see a good screen then nothing, its like someone pulls the plug.

I'm going to try to turn off hardware monitoring tonight.

what are HPT channels and VIA channels? Right now my hd is plugged into the primary IDE as a master

Lord Evermore: Already have an additional fan right behind the processor. I didn't know about the brand on the heatsink though, thanks for the info on that. I'm also parinoid about cracking the thing everytime I have pulled the heatsink off (I've done it twice actually). I guess its a temperature I'm going to have to live with. The system is running perfectly stable (I was able to run Dungeon Siege for several hours with no lockups. Something I could do on my old mobo which ran at 50-54 max [Albiet I suspect my old windows installation was the culprut in that]), so I guess I have a little room to spare 🙂. I just really need to get the case out of this enclosed desk unit.

Thanks, that makes me feel a lot better 🙂

On your board, there should be a total of 4 IDE channels. 2 belongs to VIA, and other 2 belongs to Promise. Connect your hard drive to VIA channels and turn off the Promis controllers in the bios.

ShinSa- I currently have the hard drive into the via ide primary and i have the promise disabled via the jumper. It is still a no go. I found a knowledgebase article that says i need to use standard HAL instead of ACPI HAL if an update of the BIOS doesn't work. I'm going to give that a try. I have found posts on the ASUS newsgroup with people with this exact problem so at least I'm not alone.
