I am thinking about visiting Yellowstone.

what is the best way to go Yellowstone from So. Cal?

do I need to rent a car?

how long do I need to stay to see major spots? 2 days enough? I don't do hiking or camping, just sight seeing.

I'm sorry if my questions are too vague. First time visiting so don't know what to see or expect.
So just give me some advice if you have visited Yellowstone, what to see, where to stay, how to get there (cheap! money is tight) etc.

thanks

you better start calling for reservations now. The only place you can stay are the hotels in the park, all the other towns are pretty far from all the neat stuff. Most of the attractions are an easy walk, and i would suggest you allow a min of 2 days. The park is HUGE and lots to see and do. We went last August and the temp dropped down to 20 and snowed. Not fun when camping in a tent and have 3 little kids.

So pack for cold weather.

Yes you will need to rent a car. Like i said the park is huge.

The hotels are kinda pricey and so is the food, so prepare to spend some bucks.

You will enjoy it.

We hit Yellowstone in Mid July many moons ago.

We went up from Salt Lake using I15 to just north of Idaho Falls and then headed east across the divide and into Montana. No problems with the roads, followed a Rand-McNally atlas.

Stayed in a little log cabin motel in West Yellowstone (next to the entrance). Woke up next morning with a dusting of snow and a herd of moose going downt hemain drag.

Had 2 of the children with us (7 & 12). Hit the sulpher springs, the geysers, Yellowstone falls and the dragon breath cave.
this itinerary took 1/2 day. You can spend as much time in different areas as you wish. Just do NOT piss off the bison. A little baja buggy (idiot) was leaning on its horn because a herd was crossing the road. The senior bull took offense. Buggy ended up upside side down and was good for only fiberglass memories. The head to head encounter did not phase the old bull in the least.

Is bus tour useful instead of renting a car and drive around?

I am looking for some sort of vacation package (air, tour, hotel) but could not find one.

There are a few motels in West Yellowstone and there are 2 day bus tour. Don't know it that's enough..

Are you an AAA member? They might have a package deal. Even if they don't, get the AAA tourbook from them to find out what there is to do there. Then you can check the Yellowstone site for more information.

Citrix, 20 degrees in August? Crap. I was planning on going early September, but I might get snowed out!

You should have seen all the motorcycle riders during that, they were not enjoying themselves one bit. Luckly when we pulled into our campsite a guy a few sites down in a RV said that he is leaving the next day and he gave me 3 HP printer boxes full of hardwood scraps. i had a nice big fire going until a ranger stopped by and asked me to tone it down some. 🙂
