Traveling on business in OKC this week, first time out here, staying downtown at the renaissance

#1 - Its flat as hell. Literally, i dont see a mountain anywhere
#2 - Bricktown is very cool
#3 - Bricktown even has hooters.
#4 - These are the nicest people in the world i've ever seen on the streets.
#5 - They truly do have the worlds best steak
#6 - Be sure to stop by the OKC bombing memorial - no words to describe it when you are in person. If you can't, i'll post pics later in the week.
#7 - Weather patterns = 70 and sunny, 6 hours later it can be thunderstorms & hail

You're right.....OKC is flat and boring as hell. Come to Tulsa while you're in the state and see the real Oklahoma. Those people down in OKC all have tree envy and hate us for our rivers(natural ones not like the ones they carved out), trees, rolling hills, lakes, lush green valleys, and we also have the best looking women in the state.

That's no lie....there was a day last week when I thought my house was going to blow away and there wasn't even a tornado around. I'm sure Network Dad would love to get a view of one of our famous F4 or F5's.

Word up. Tulsa is actually pretty nice (I can say this now that I have been away from Oklahoma for a couple of years). I was not a fan of OKC.
 
I live in Tulsa, but I consult in OKC quite a bit (sometimes 3+ days a week). I was down there today all day today in fact.

There's not much I like about OKC, but Ted's Cafe Escondido IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. There are also tons of restaurants/bookstores/etc. along Northwest Expressway.

If you like coffee, there's an absolutely amazing coffee shop on 39th and Meridian (thereabouts) called Oklahoma Java. I think it must be how they have their beans roasted, because their espresso is incredible...

Btw, where did you get the world's best steak? Mickey Mantle's? You should really try Mahogany's in Tulsa if you think OKC has a good steak 😀. Mahogany's in Tulsa is the quintessence of culinary profundity.

Wow, there are other anandtechers that live in OKC, wow I did not know that. First of all Teds is not that great, I mean its good food and all, but its been over hyped, there are alot better places in Edmond (run by ex-Ted cheifs). But, I am glad your having a good time, and that you like Bricktown. To tell the truth, I never thought the MAPS project would ever turn out that great.

How have you not seen a Tornado, where do you live? I mean lets see there was the May 3 one, that cut through the Nichols Hills, The Village and died over lake Hefner then there was the one a year or two latter that came up I-35 and destroyed most of the south part of the city.

Don't you know that when the tornado sirens go off you are supposed to go outside and look for it? Geez. 😉

I've seen several....especially when I was in college at OSU. Stillwater seemed to be in some sort of geographic anomaly where tornadoes would pass outside of the town but never come through it. One year on my birthday, April 26th, we were having a cookout when the skies suddenly got all dark and ominous. My roommate went in and turned on the TV and sure enough there was a tornado warning for Payne County. We started seeing all kinds of lightning and hearing thunder, but it was still relatively clear where we were. All of the sudden the tornado sirens went off and some people went inside and some of us stayed out since there wasn't anything going on in Stillwater itself. They yelled out to us that a tornado was on the ground South of Stillwater so we started looking that direction. We couldn't really see the tornado, be we could see the dust/debris cloud off in the distance about 5 or so miles south of us. Then somebody noticed off to our North that there was a funnel on the ground 3 or 4 miles away. It was weird standing there watching two tornadoes yet the wind where we were was hardly blowing and it never started raining. In my life I've seen a tornado on 7 different occasions. 4 of those occasions were on my birthday. My friends all have a joke that if it's my birthday you should be at least 50 miles from wherever I am just to be safe.

Just about every weekend once it gets warm and stays that way. Give me time to get the rest of my house remodel finished, the pool table in, and we will have our own Tulsa area ATOT meeting at my house.
