Ugh... I hate how the new Escape looks. Instead of looking like a real off-road SUV, but looks like some sissified crossover.
 
23/33 doesn't seem that good to me. Especially when recommending $.25-.30 more per gallon premium. I had higher expectations for the 1.6L Ecoboost.
 
Escape = Small crossover
Edge = Large crossover
Explorer = Truck based SUV
Flex = XL crossover / minivan alternative

Explorer is built on the taurus platform. It's no longer truck based as it is front wheel drive.

WTF you talking 'bout, Willis? The escape was never ever ever a "real off-road SUV, nor did it ever look like one.

Really? I think that the 2008-2012 Escapes look like actual off road vehicles. They might not be, but they kinda look like Jeep or a Bronco.

Couple years behind who? They're the only domestic brand that has a strong lineup and been integrating new technologies as they arrive. If I was in the market for a new car I'd look at Ford first.
 
Guys, first off to get those hp # you need premium gas.

Second, I still think the king of small SUVs is the Rav 4 4x4 V6.
Followed by the Forester XT

Need more mpg, crv is the leader. I think ford can really only compete with the fwd 4 cylinder small suv

Need more power and awd go with tr first two I mentiOned

The current one does look like a truck, unless you look below and see the spindly independent suspension arms and weak halfshafts.

When the Escapes first came out I was still working in autobody. First one we got had to go on the frame rack and once I was underneath I was literally laughing. They're a bit of a PITA to work on sheetmetal wise too.
 
I just noticed that they are going to have a plug-in version. That's rather attractive. I just wish I knew more about costs and other things. Stupid waiting.

The C-Max is at the top of my list. Not sure I can wait until Fall though. Also, not sure what the pricing will be. I know Ford's lease price on the Focus is ridiculous. So I have doubts about C-Max pricing.

The cost for the Hybrid version is supposed to be on par or under the Prius V. Plugin version $5-6K more. Supposedly this fall actually means this summer. They are being very coy about the C-Max. I wish they would just spill the beans already.

I think the whole thing, inside and out, looks very korean.

I prefer the old body but new interior. Either way, the quality of the last one was absolutely terrible, hopefully they worked on that as well as the styling.



Am I the only one that would prefer to have well thought-out solid controls and quality over the "flashy" angled cheap interior vents and new steering wheel styles?

I think this is part of the reason I like bmw so much, that they spend a bunch of time on certain key design ques (whether it's interior, exterior, or powertrain) and stick with it while making functional improvements to the existing design. IMO it really helps add value to their overall brand as well.

Compare this to other brands (chrysler tends to be the worst..) where they have sort of halfass designs that they use for a a year or two before scrapping and starting completely over. It shows that they aren't confident their existing product and felt the need to start from scratch.

They probably want to make sure anything they say doesn't have to change by the time that it's released. I'm thinking they could still be working on getting things like the final EPA mpg numbers.

Huh? My wife has a 2009 hybrid, and it's still solid after 95,000 miles.

She has it covered in coffee and makeup stains, but that's not the car's fault 🙂

I mean things like the glovebox made is made out of tissue paper, door panels rattle no matter how lightly you close the doors, unfinished and rough plastic edges, 'extra' plastic from molds that wasn't trimmed, the leather feels more like PVC than leather, all of the latches feel cheap and loose, that sort of thing.

No doubt that the car itself will last a long time, the motor and trans is good (albeit the 4cyl has historically been underpowered...), it's just the lack of attention to details that bother me.

I'm not trying to 'rag on' the car, I understand it's built to a certain price point, but if you compare the interior of a '10 escape to a '10 rav4, the rav4 is put together much much better (and fyi I'm not exactly a raging toyota fan). Many other vehicles are guilty of these things, it's just something I wish they'd work on.

It doesn't cost much more per vehicle to trim the plastic molding, to design more solid latches, vent grills that don't fall apart....

The escape has not had a true refresh since it was first released in 2000. Ford had far more pressing issues in the last 5 years, especially with the current escape selling neck and neck to be the top seller in the market.

They've finished correcting most of their old mistakes though, and are moving on to the models that need it. Escape, Econoline (going away), etc.

They (Ford) are also world class in quality, IF you remove the mess that is Ford-Touch. Hopefully the latest upgrades will correct most of those issues. Frankly, once that integration is working flawlessly, it will become huge selling point.

The new Ford (of the last 5 years or so) has become very product-oriented. Thank Alan Mulally for finally kicking some sense into our idiotic upper management.
 
I think it will do well in its target market. You don't really need much off road capability to park on the grass at your kids soccer practice. A minivan would be a more logical choice, but it will sell well.
