DISCUSS!

What will save rock and roll is the proliferation of Indie artists. I can't help but feel this is aided by mp3 piracy. When music ceases to be profitable only those driven to create music will do so. Obviously this argument is fraught with hypocrisy... c'est la vie.

I would argue that in the last ten years we have seen the biggest proliferation of new and inventive sounds since the genre (rock) was created. Rock and roll definately does not need saving. The problem is that while the underground scene has flourished, the mainstream is being increasingly dominated by the major labels who are getting better and better at marketing their boring, cookie-cutter music. The question is, who is going to save pop music.

Love 'em. Great drumming, brilliant guitar playing, fun and original. Singer is ordinary looking but incredibly sexy anyway.

I like Jet a lot too, for totally different reasons.

Very meh. Heard so many good things, heard one song, it was decent, heard a bunch more and just... meh. Nothing exciting.
I'd rather listen to the New Pornographers (hit and miss though they may be).

I have their album. Pretty meh. The womans voice gets really annoying after two songs and the lack of bass makes the guitar hurt my ears. It's better than most music today but that's not saying alot.

They borrow alot of their sound from bands like The Stooges to trying to be Wendy O, (albeit a much more tastefull Wendy O). As far as Franz Ferdidand the same thing applies, heard their sound before, and heard it done better. Just my two cents.

(wait for the obligatory wow your name fits you man)

Here's where I take issue. You could have stopped with the first sentiment of your first sentence and everybody, including yourself, would have been happier. The truth is simply that the Yeah Yeah Yeah's aren't bad. Anything else is superfluous to the point. They are in my mix becuase they're alright. They're better than bad. They're not fvcking terrible, and that's good enough for me.

You can posture all day based on your superior experience in the scene, but in the end it doesn't detract from the fact that both the Yeah Yeah Yeah's and Franz Ferdinand are very listenable, catchy music. That is what Pop music is supposed to be. It's not avant garde, and if the scenesters are upset because the vanguard which they loved so much has been moved into the median, that's their problem.

Everybody is really happy that you've seen bands that are better. We humbly submit to your superiority and beg your indulgence in allowing us to listen to these bands un-harassed, I'll make it up to you by buying Jenny Toomey's next album 'k (I do own the Liquorice disk, which I hope is obscure enough for you).

Sorry, not a big fan, but as a huge music fan, I can tell you the Yeah Yeah Yeah's will probably join the disbanded/dead lead singer category eventually. The whole band is pretty open about their habitual drug use. They give a really poor live performance as well.

All I said was I had heard it before, and heard it done better, and that wasn't meant as a slam against either group. I'm not telling anyone what to like or not like, hell I still listen to Franz Ferninand once in awhile. I was simply trying to state that there is more out there, and maybe I could have stated that differently, but I didn't. If you take offense to that and find it as snobbery, that's your problem, not mine.

...everyone has their influences, whether its mason by kiss, or deflepard by the clash, or elvis by the blues.....everyone has an influence. Its a drive and sometimes forces simular sounds. Its natural. Its cool that you have your opinion about them being not original, but I've also got mine. We obviously listen to different music. I've not really hear a band like the YYYs, and you have. Cool. :) But, I bet at one point when you heard the bad that they sound like and thought, damn...this is good stuff, someone somewhere had already heard it. Every single person is not in sync.
