It's really simple. You can call friends while driving to shoot the breeze. My focus is still on driving. My friends think it's hilarious because I'll be mid-story, say someone cuts me off and I'll randomly start cussing, for whatever reason everyone finds it funny. Talking actually helps keep me focused, I'll randomly start bitching about redlight cameras when I start coming up on one, or something of that sort.

Don't talk about serious stuff while on the phone. Don't call your family member you haven't seen in 10 years to catch up, don't finish an argument with a friend, etc. It's not that hard, people.

It should be obvious that the problem is in fact idiots, not cellphones. It's not like airplane pilots are distracted by the traffic air controller and accidentally plow their plane into the ground. You can actually talk while doing something complicated.
 
Oh that's nothing. Once I was on Route 66 (Northern VA), in extremely heavy traffic (think about 1 car width max between all at 60 mph over all 4 lanes in my direction). So the lady in the SUV next to me decides to switch into my lane, or, more precisely, my current position. Wasn't even in her blind spot. Had to slam on the breaks and drop back, almost got rear-ended in the process. Got a good look at her as I did. She was on her cell phone and facing the opposite direction while switching (saw the back of her head). :| She noticed when she was about halfway into my lane, but it didn't do much difference at that point. I had a nice long vengeance honk.

Glad I was awake that morning. If I hadn't been paying attention dumb bitch might have killed me and God knows how many others that would have inevitably piled up behind us.

Did I ever say that it didn't? I'm sure people have backed into concrete poles before too. Fact is both the OPs story and mine were caused (at least in part) by stupid cell phone usage. Hence the relevance.

I don't know how true it was, but I read somewhere that a good number of accidents are causes when people sneeze a few times in a row and from blinking when they sneeze they end up getting in a crash. I believe there is some truth to it. Which means we should ban sneezing while you drive.

Man, this is the INTERNET. If that ganesh1 guy annoys you, there's no need to rend your clothes and start moaning - just ignore him. hmm i think texting is more dangerous... i think they should come up with something that makes texting more difficult (press one extra button) when the vehicle is moving (using gps) and if the phone is in the driver area (using some sort of sensor).
 
Handsfree-only has been a law here for years now yet I still see so many drivers with a phone held up against their ear. It's so obvious too... is it really worth that $100+ ticket? Put it on fricken speaker at least...
