Yeah.. So i proke a capisitor off my vid card

OK so I?m like really pissed right now. I've broken one of the capacitors off my EVGA 7800GT's off the very top right of the card. I've spoken with EVGA and they said I "could" RMA it but it could be declined for RMA if there is any physical damage to it. There is one small scratch off the top of it and I've installed an NV-78 Water bock to it. I thought about soldering it back on but I'm don't really remember how too very well and I can?t even get the solder to melt very much. And if I do, it won't stay for long enough to melt the other side and stick it back on. I'm not trying to RMA it on the idea that it was sent damaged because I know that I F*ed it up. (Removing my water pump and it got caught and didn't know) SO I'm in a rut. EVGA customer service guy said I could just take it to an electrician and see if they could do it, but I?m thinking that a jeweler would be better. PLEASE HELP...

Take it to the local electronics shop. The'll probably be able to fix it. Just go down to the shop, and see if they can. And I guess you can tell them to be really careful.

Why take it to a jeweler? Since when does a jeweler specalize in electronics?

if you still have the piece that broke off, it should fit in place very cleanly. Place it exactly where it belongs, then press it down with something non-conductive (like a toothpick). Put a drop of superglue on each side to keep it in place. give it a few seconds then you should be all set.

I broke a cap off a XP2100 once and this worked just fine

I might try this because i'm not aware of any one that would be able to fix this near me. Is there any process i should try to clean it off? I've tried to resolder it my self...

Got a refurb MSI 5900 from Newegg 'bout 2 years ago and it had a cap just hanging off of the card. I took it to a local electronics shop and they charged me $42 to have it fixed. The savings I got on the refurb card were instantly lost on the repair, and I could have bought retail (with the game bundle) for my final tally. Regardless, it was a helluva nice card but you already have some good suggestions, with the ghetto repair with glue your easiest option for you personally. Resale value is crap tho, as that is now the fragile part of the card and must be handled delicately.

Is it a chip capacitor or a larger discrete? Either way, soldering the original back isn't too hard.
I've fixed P2s and a couple of parts that way.

I soldered a new Q9 back on to a 9800pro after I broke the original one off. 8 tiny little surface mount feet. A small iron, a steady hand, and a few tries, and it worked perfectly. You can't even tell the chip was ever missing.

Some new thermal epoxy for the little heat sink, and the card is as good as new and still going today.

Thank you every one for the information. I actually had to sit on it for about a week before I could do any thing with it because I was so pissed off. LOL. Well here are some pictuers of where it came from and one of them shows where is should be and how big it is. There is on 2 contacts that would need to be soldered but i can't get under it or any thing to get the mision accomplished. Ok NEways on with the pics.

that is terrible lighting but it should sodder on fine if you get a hot enough iron... the superglu emight work too

The only problem with that is the heat. You have to have a soldering iron that has a specific heat for capacitors. You cannot just take any cheap-o soldering iron and go to work. You are probably better off trying for an RMA or something.

Any aviation maintenance schools near you? The avionics weenies I went to school with were good with the iron. They always had side projects going on that the instructors helped them with.

Well if you could give me that information. I've really messed it up now. I've tried to solder it and that didn't work. I thought about applying the heat to the tip of the Diod/Capasator and melting the solder but I didn't want to cook it. So I tried to super-glue it. Well I succeded in breaking off both tabs off and there is like less then 1/32 in comming off it I'm guessing I'll have to purchase a new one and then get some one to install it. I'm not sure how good or if Viper John can do this but its time for me to kiss some @$$ and get this fixed. (why am I so stupid) :|

honestly , there are good odds, the board will still work anyway. you might wanna try just running the card.

i've broken caps off before and the boards would still work fine.

caps are there to smooth the flow of power in case of say something like a crappy power supply (caps are like a reservoir of power) etc. since boards tend to have A LOT of them, you can probably lose one or something and the gpu will still have enough power through all its other power pins (cpus and gpus have many power pins) that it shouldnt affect it much.

seriously just try it out, good odds itll still work.

You can always buy a new cap from somewhere. Since you have the original, just check the spec and get a new one, and then find someone who knows how to solder and get them to help you.
