So I had to do some calling today about rebates. This is the first time in a couple years I've had any no shows so all in all I'd still consider my rebate record to be healthy.
The first was to HP. Ordered a color laser jet from them where they would send you a check for about the cost of a black ink cartridge if you bought it at the same time. A month or so after I sent my stuff in I did get an odd letter about them needing a serial number. I think they wrote it as if I didn't send the UPC in, although I did but it was a stick on the box label type UPC that had not seen good days when it was delivered so I can understand about it not being a great item to read data from. Of course what did get me about this was that I ordered these direct from HP and the HP receipt had stock and serial numbers for all the items on the receipt which was also submitted. This rebate was about 4 months late and I was expected a possible fight but was disappointed when the lady on the phone just said my submission hadn't been pushed along after they received my response to their letter and she just sent a check.
The second and the odd of the two was for a newegg item. I was going to get a copy of vista around turkey day and they had ultimate on sale for about the same price as basic after the rebate. My info had never shown up on their rebate site and with this one about a month and a half overdue I put a call in. Things went downhill from their. The number on my rebate was out of service, but at least they had a voice recording of the new number, no forwarding just the number. However it wasn't quite that easy, as the first couple times I called the number number I received a generic phone company number out of service message. At this point I'm thinking that for any other company this would be a good scam. Before heading to their website and starting to send emails I called the original number again just to check and found that they screwing with us. The newegg guy giving the message tells you the new number twice, but the second time he switches two of the digits. (and guess which one most people are likely to copy from) Retry with the first one and I finally get through. And now the real weirdness starts; lady answers the phone I tell her what the rebate was for and then she tells me that those rebates are on hold "while their legal department finds someone to award the rebates". Once they find one they will be sent out. I simply say OK and hang up, while thinking a rather loud WTF ghostrider.
At least I can now mark off "legal department looking into it" from my reasons for rebate being delayed bingo sheet.
