I have never been persuaded that popularity = quality. Are you implying that Britney Spears is, today, the world's greatest musical artist, by this logic? Other popular music in the '80's included any number of dreadful hair bands (a la Poison, Warrant, etc.) and a whole lotta vapid teen pop like New Kids on the Block - I suppose you paid $550 for backstage passes to see them as well!
 
For that type of coinage and being submitted to listening to Kid Rock I would expect no less than a lap dance from his girlfriend..

What does she see in him besides he is a musician and she is a groupie?

A lot of Mahavishnu Orchestra, Stanley Clark, Chick Corea, Any artist who was on the Blue Note Label plus Metallica, Guns N' Roses, The Cult, Peter Gabriel, Faith no More (who are no more). Oingo Boingo, Ozzy Osbourne, Phycadelic Furs, Plimsouls, PIL (Public Image Limited) Early REM, Roxy Music, Smithereens, Scorpians, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Steely Dan, Stranglers, Talking Heads, UB40 (before they sold out) XTC, ZZTop and Frank Zappa just to name a few.

when i said i was on crak..i was implying that i spent more then it will be worth...i like kid rock, but he isnt THAT great....but it will still be a fun show

#2. DP Mode was very popular in the 80's..i feel it was due to tallent, i like tallented bands (as do many other people)...if you dont like them...kewl 4 u

Whether you've got disposable income or not, $200 to see Kid Rock is nuts. I'm still trying to decide if i want to spend half that to see The Who. Quite frankly, the fact that after 40 years those old bums can charge $80 for lawn seats and still sell out a venue for 3 nights straight proves a lot more than trendy Kid Rock.
I'd sooner spend $200 on something material...at least i'd have something to show for my expense in the end.

Let's put it this way.
With useful tools such as MTV, Rolling Stone Magazine, network radio, and a well-primed merchandising machine, since 1981 talent was NOT required to make a popular band, and since the days of The Beatles, even without some of these tools it was possible to "create" a sensation.
Record labels simply use these resources to manufacture popularity. They generate the impression that the talent and the popularity already exists. You assume that since they are all over MTV and Rolling Stone, although you haven't heard of them, they must be good or else they wouldn't be on MTV or Rolling Stone.
A good label and manager doesn't "find" talent, he "generates" it.

It is safe to assume that Depeche Mode achieved popularity via the auspices of modern mass-marketing. You say yourself, they had neither looks nor money, but they didn't have much talent either.

You are a target market. Remember that.
