looks like a solid system to me, though I'd say go with WinXP Pro if you're going with a system like that - you won't regret it or turn back

great system. are you planning on overclocking?

there is no reason to go with XP pro, unless you need the advanced networking features or file encryption. otherwise it is exactly the same.

I find the "advanced" networking features of XP Pro to be useful even on my "simple" home network (not running a domain, BTW).

System looks good, anyhow.

holy cow! that's almost the exact same system i'm going to build! 🙂
Although i'm not exactly sure if i'd go with the Maxtor HDD, i know quite a few people who aren't exactly thrilled with thier performance. but other than that sounds pretty good.

AS5 if you want thermal paste. Wipe the crap off the retail HSF and ur good to go. Temps drop like a rock. Even with my stock cooler, temps dropped amazing, and then even more with a new HSF.

Yea... Get XP Professional... You need it for remote desktop connection too.... and as long as you are allready buying your stuff from Newegg you can just buy the OEM version for the same price as the XP Home(Retail).

Excellent budget system!

Only thing i'd change is the DVD burner.

The NEC 3540 isn't very good; get the Pioneer or BenQ

Hmm.... the problem is that I have a legal copy of XP Home lying around my house (this is why I did not list a price for the OS), but I may be able to get XP Pro from a university...

LoL. Well one more thing...Maxtor is good, but Seagate is better.

Seagate Barracuda 250GB SATA

Hmm... the Maxtor has 16MB cache....

Also, with all this talk of BF2, should I buy a system with 2 gigs of RAM?

True but it runs as hot if not hotter than a raptor and it will be loud. 7200.8 is very quiet and VERY nice.

3540 is good. 3520 and 3500 were great for their time, but many drives have caught up to NEC and so 3540 is not like astonishing. It's not hte most compatible drive, but if you go read Anand's system recommendation that came out yesterday, he still recommends the NEC burner, so go with the 3540A. You can't find the BenQ anyways, and the Pioneer doesn't even come close ot NEC.

What about 2gigs of RAM? I don't game a lot, but I would like to play BF2 at Medium-High settings at 1024x768 with 2xAA
