Rejoicing in someone's misery is usually low and selfish but I'm glad a car salesleech got burned. Funny how they are so eager to take your money until it comes time for delivery. Then the situation gets complicated. The People's Republic of Taxichusetts sets insurance rates and mandates that no car may be registered without insurance. Not only that but they will not issue temporary plates on an out of state vehicle and allow coverage at the same time. OK, a real pain but workable. My insurance agent was gonna take care off all the registration for a $50 fee. Not bad for not standing in line at the RMV (DMV to the rest of the world). I get back to the dealer with my final paperwork and they insisted on doing it all. Not only did they charge $150 but wanted an additional $115 on top of it all for a out of state registration. WTF? They gave me a horror story about how someone tried to do it once and screwed it up completely delaying the pickup by a month. Alright, alright, I'll pay the fee for convenience.

A week later I still hear nothing. After a few calls it seems they are having problems with the insurance people. There was a lot of back and forth about wrong paper work etc. The dealer claims they were sent the wrong forms but the insurance people say the dealer didn't know jack squat about how to register a Massachusetts vehicle. I mediated and the dispute. it took a week to straighten out the mess.

Then over the next two and a half weeks it became a comedy of errors that make the Keystone Kops seem like Sherlock Holmes. They supposidly had a "professional" company handle all the paperwork but it was a joke. They submitted the wrong paperwork, worked with copies instead of originals, submitted incomplete paperwork, sat on paperwork, and more. I was getting pretty impatient. The car was promised many times but never delivered. I put in for 3 days off which I had to take back (ie. fill out HR paperwork until I cried carpal tunnel syndrome) because they weren't ready. There was an excuse at every corner "Oh, the insurance people are slow", "The DMV messed up", "The runner is not in". That was when I could find them at all. Sometimes it took 2 days to get a response to voicemail. The last straw came when they accused me of submitting incomplete paperwork.

I immediatly went to a message board where I posted many recommendations for the dealer and announced I retract my endorsement. Within a day the salesmanager appeared and posted a somewhat sarcastic response about me ruining the dealer's reputation and pawning the blame off on the people that handled the registration. WTF!?!? They basically tried to wash their hands of any responsibility. Fine whatever, just give me my damn car which I;ve waited a month for.

Here's the kicker. The next day some "M.D." posted a new thread that basically bashed what I said as "baseless" and implied I was a trouble maker that tried to ruin the repuation of the dealer. The message basically said I was a liar. Then some eagle eyed member realized that the IP address of the sales manager and "M.D." were the same and came from the same ISP. Hmmmm......

Today I get a very surprising call. Corporate HQ saw the whole episode and they paid a visit to the dealer. They apologized for the entire episode and offered to pay the first monthly payment because it basically sat in a lot. They are also making the dealer pay for insurance until I get the car fully registered in Massachusetts.

What a day.

Man oh man. I would've just washed my hands of it and would've gotten a car somewhere else. It's good thought that it finally gotten taken care of by the Corporate HQ. I hope you enjoy your new car man.

Glad it worked out. A guy I know put up a website bitching about the problems he had with his truck and the dealer who sold it to him. The dealer replaced it with a slightly better truck at no additional cost to him, except the fact that as a condition of the deal he had to make the website "go away" after they did the switch.

Now if only there were ways to make that happen all the time to those bastages instead of through pure chance.

Hmm...I'll have to think about it.

Man oh man... another dealer screwing the client story. Had to de-lurk for this one. Had a 4 month ordeal with a local dealer; switched to another dealer and was treated just as shabbily. Tore up the paperwork and put new shocks and brakes on my old, paid-for car. WHAT TO DO? These b*stards seem to hold all the cards and know all the dirty tricks. Then I found a book in a used book store which explains the entire automobile sales industry from the ground up. Before you even THINK of buying a new or used vehicle, read, no STUDY, "DON'T GET TAKEN EVERY TIME" by Remar Sutton (Penguin Books 1997). This is an UNPAID, UNSOLICITED testimonial. I'm 2/3 through the book and will read and reread the book until I am ready to face those lying thieves on MY terms.

Good luck to all and Merry Christmas, or Happy Holidays to all y'all.

About two years ago, my mother bought a new Nissan Maxima from a local dealer. On the first day we noticed that the rubber sealing around the windows of the left rear door was loose and, for lack of a better term, "all out of whack". The next day we found shards of safety glass under the driver's seat. Putting two and two together, we realized that the car had either been in an accident or had been broken into. My mother took the car back to the dealer, who basically said, "So what?". When mom told them that she was going to leave the car with them, they told her that, "are not responsible for what might happen to the car while it was on the lot" because it was not their car anymore. The way they said it, it was more of a veiled threat. Fortunately, the check had not yet been deposited, and mom was able to stop the check and left the car at the dealer's. Once the dealer realized that the check had been stopped, the took the car back without a word. A week or two later we got an identical car from another dealership, from which we actually got a better deal, and which impressed us enough that my father bought his '98 Ford Explorer from the same dealership.

When I bought my Prelude SH back in '97, the dealer told me he could get the car I wanted within 30 days so I left him a sizable deposit.

After 45 days he calls me to tell me my car is in the showroom. I go there and it is a regular Prelude S with Auto in black when I wanted SH (manual) in silver. I told him it wasn't what I ordered so he calls the pit boss who tells me it is but they'll keep this one and look for a more suitable one. I go to another dealer and they have one sitting smack dab in their showroom. I quickly get the same arrangement on the car (actually slightly better) and narrowly beat out someone who tried to buy the car a few minutes after me (there was a lot of anger and confusion).

When I try to get my deposit back from the original dealer they go nuts on me and tell me they are keeping it because I broke a binding contract. I start getting nasty calls from the sales managers there telling me to return my new car or else they threatened to keep my money.

Finally fed up with this sh!t, I call Honda headquarters and they tell me they cannot directly intervene. I call my lawyer friend who writes me up a nice legal letter stating that they were actually in breach of contract because they had a reasonable time to get me what I wanted. After delivering the letter to them, they finally acquiesce and give me my money back about 2 months after this whole thing happened.

I really hate those scumbags!

I was told my car was in perfect condition, and paid a hefty price for it, they said they would fix anything wrong that was found after the inspection for free. I got the inspection, new brakes and tires were needed, after 10 calls, no one would fix anything. They lie!!!! I was out $750

7 series or M5?

Just 2 weeks ago I had my first encounter against an M5. Sweet car, the driver though was a complete moron in trying to bait me into a race. Homer rolls down his window and starts chattering that I'll take him to 30mph but after that "bye bye baby!!". I started to chuckle which only caused him to start revving his engine--probably with his foot on the clutch too. The light turns red, I gun it, he gun's it's pretty close until buttmunch hits the rev-limiter and I'm way outta reach after that.

Of course, as luck would have it, we are both first in line at the next light and he again rolls down the window and explains that he lost traction which was the cause for hitting the rev-limiter. At this point I figured it was only fair to warn him that my car is far from stock and that while his car is fast it ain't fast enough and him hitting the rev limiter wouldn't have mattered anyway. This sends him into a tizzy and when the light turns he must have burned about 5,000 miles off the tires, meanwhile I pulled into the dunkin donuts.........

Boy, dealers can really s*ck!

I was thinking of getting a new BMW 323ci for my 5 year old 318ti. I was getting my car serviced at the dealer where I bought the car so I thought I would check out the new car at the same time.

The salesman was such a jerk that I'll never go back to that dealership. All he wanted to discuss was how much he would "give" me for my trade-in. He was basically only interested in getting my car so he could sell it for a nice profit.

No matter how many times I told him I didn't want to discuss it, he just kept persisting. After using some unmentionable words, I got my car from the service department, never to return.

I decided to keep my car another year or two since it still looks like new and has very low miles.

Oh well, they lost a good customer. I just can't understand how they can afford to act this way.

beat, I guess I had a rectal/cranial interface probelem that clouded my judgement. it's the first time I;ve been civic to car salesleech to be courtious. I'm going back to my a$$hole self.

JasonG, what dealer? I know Herb Chambers really sucks. Arrogant as hell and they try to slip "extras" onto the invoice without telling you. They make it seem like tey are doing you a favor by selling you a car. I heard BMW of Peabody is nice. I just moved from Cambridge to Waltham last August.

Hey Windogg,

It was BMW Gallery on the automile. Maybe it was just that salesman but I've noticed they had gotten more arrogant everytime I've been there.

Since it's close, I've been using Herb Chambers for service. The last time was better than usual. Usually they are real jerks. They are also very expensive.

When I bought my 318ti, I went there (Herb Chambers) to look and noone even came up to me after 20 minutes in the showroom. I just left without talking to anyone...

BMW of Peabody was OK but also mostly typical salesmen. I think I would go to Foreign Motors West next time if I bought a BMW (the 2002 Audi A4 coupes may be a better deal though). They seemed very nice and I almost used them for the 318ti.

Too bad about your experience. I hope you enjoy the X5 when you get it. Nice SUV!

Good luck!
