A former college volleyball player was shot to death in St. Louis only hours before she was scheduled to play in an alumni volleyball game.

Megan Boken, 23, a former all-state volleyball player from Illinois, was shot while sitting inside a white Volkswagen outside the apartment complex where she lived Saturday afternoon, Fox2Now reports. Boken was in St. Louis to visit her alma mater, St. Louis University, and play in the annual alumni game.

Witnesses say they saw a man either get out of her car or approach her vehicle, open the door, shoot Boken in the neck and chest and run away, MyFoxChicago.com reports. Boken was rushed to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Those who knew Boken say they are stunned by the attack, saying Boken was a standout volleyball player and an honor roll student.

"She'll be remembered as an unbelievable teammate. She played on championship teams, but she was that teammate that kept everybody together," St. Louis University's athletic director Chris May told MyFoxChicago.com.

May says the players were informed of Boken's death after the game. Boken was second team all-conference at SLU ranking among the top players in school history; making two NCAA championship appearances. She also made the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll for academic excellence before graduating in 2011.

"She's everything you want in a student athlete: wonderful student, a great athlete and an even better person," May told Fox2Now.
Boken's family released a statement Sunday, asking for privacy.

"Megan was a wonderful and beautiful human being loved by everyone she met. The family and the community are devastated by this senseless tragedy and the family would like to thank everyone for their outpouring of support," the statement said.

Investigators say they believe the suspect is an African-American male in his 20s, and say this type of crime is "highly unusual" in that area of town, Fox2Now reports.

Though there was initial speculation Boken may have known her attacker, her family says there is no evidence of that. The police have not said whether they believe Boken knew her killer.

Investigators also said they have recovered casings from a gun and are canvassing the neighborhood looking for more witnesses and surveillance video that might help them trace the victim and the suspect’s movements.

EDIT: Apparently caught the guys who did it. 2 18 year olds..

Carjacking "gone bad"...as if they are ever good...

She was apparently on the phone when she was shot.

She was shot outside her apartment complex, that she was visiting?

St. Louis is rough, I knew a guy that used to do construction in the area and got jumped 2 or 3 times while on site working late.

St. Louis is ranked as 3rd most dangerous US city. Might as well nuke it along with Detroit and Flint.

http://247wallst.com/2012/06/11/the-most-dangerous-cities-in-america-2/3/

A few trends I noticed...
-All except Little Rock have an unemployment rate significantly higher than the national average. Little Rock is a bit of an anomaly actually having low unemployment.
-Out of the top 5, four plan to lay off or have laid off police officers. Six in total of the top ten plan layoffs in the police department.
-All are below US median income. Though only Flint and Detroit have medium incomes at the poverty line.
-All are controlled by Democrat mayors.
-Most have a majority African-American population except Oakland, Stockton, Little Rock.
-Baltimore and Atlanta are among the top 10 US cities with the most debt.

What you make of this will greatly depend on your point of view, but there's a few things in there worth considering. Economics seems to be a big part of it.

It seems like this always happens to honor roll students. Reminds me of the Eve Carson case.

Only seems that way because it's reported nationally. There's no interest in the inner-city nobody that was murdered. And there were probably 25 of those the same night this girl was killed.

Why hasn't anybody chimed in yet with the BAN ALL GUNS rant? amdhunter??

I'm sure the shooter felt ecstasy as he got to take human life. :sneaky:

Actually, I think there is no outrage because people just don't care about Pretty White Woman Syndrome any more.
