Yay, I have a Mac... now what do I do with it?

Hey there, PC user, gamer, and all-around tinkerer here. I just recently picked up a PowerMac G4 from a university surplus sale. It's a low-end Mirrored Drive Door model, dual 867mHz processors and an 80-gig HDD, DVD burner, probably some other crap I'm forgetting. Whatever, it was cheap and I was curious, so I figured, "hey, why not?" I brought it home, figured out how to add a new user account, upgraded it to OS X 10.4 (yay $5 at Weird Stuff) and installed Firefox. I'm quite proud of myself, but now I have no idea what to do with the damn thing.

I had one use in mind when I purchased this, which was testing out the Mac version of Deus Ex with a mod I make. That seems pretty light use for something like this though; I know they're way more capable then that. More than that, I know there are some things that are specific to Macs, games, programs, what have you, though damned if I can think of any of them. Someone want to clue me in?

Also, while I'm on the topic, there are a bunch of other user accounts on here. I assume there's a way to reset the passwords using the root/admin account or otherwise get into them, but I have no idea how.

EDIT: Also, before anyone asks, yes I've read the Mac Newbie thread. It was quite useful.

You have the OS X 10.4 disk, right? Just do a fresh install, for starters...

Other than that, all the really cool stuff is intel Mac only. If you can upgrade to 10.5, then that will at least get you a POSIX compliant OS, so you can do some more cool stuff with open source software and MacPorts.

As for UnrealScript, you can edit it and run it under Unreal just like normal. The rest of the SDK requires Windows running natively.

As an aside, I'm looking for people to make an indie game or mod with. Get in touch with me if interested 🙂

I was looking at upgrading to 10.5, but apparently it wipes out Classic Environment, which is needed to run Deus Ex. I may still, eventually, but right now I need to leave it at 10.4.

I also may wipe out the old install completely but I am really quite curious what's in those user accounts. That's why I'm asking. I'm not planning on doing anything with what I find in there unless it's random cool apps or something, but still, I'd like to know.

Leopard (10.5) won't run well on that system. It bogged down on the single core G4 1.33ghz system I had. Not much you can use it for other than a web and email box. Probably won't handle flash video. Macs make good home servers though.
