I know I am a day or so late on it, but yesterday and today were busy days.

The main joke/punchline aside... anyone have any clue what the "...but since March of 1997 I don't really believe in anything" line was about??

My best guest is Hale-Bopp.

Here is wikipedia on the major events of March 1997:

Was yahoo around that time, or search engines in general?

[EDIT]nvm, they just acquired Four11 in March 97

On 8 March 1997, Yahoo! acquired online communications company Four11.

The Heaven's Gate thing does make sense with 'getting a religious idea out to the rest of the world'.

Like I sorta said... it "sorta" fits. I was expecting something more... obvious, I guess would be the best word.

The Heaven's Gate thing or possibly the Phoenix Lights thing is my guess, unless there's something totally stupid that we missed, and since XKCD is usually totally stupid, I wouldn't doubt it.

the first page of the XKCD forum's thread about the comic seems to indicate that the Heaven's Gate thing is what it they're referring to. or it might just be the XKCD guys getting a kick out of people unwittingly googlebombing march 1997.
