I'm not sure about calories but go with an elliptical because it is easier on your knees and feet...low-impact smoothness.

My Pro-Form 700 elliptical usually says I burn 300 calories during a 20 minute session. Depends on speed and resistance.

The Elliptical burns a lot of calories...

for instance, I'll give you a rundown of my workout today

Tredmill - 20 Minutes @ 7mph - 377 calories
Tredmill - 25 Minutes walking @ 3.5 mph on a 4.0 incline - 226 calories
Exercise bike - 20 minutes - 146 Calories
Elliptical - 20 Minutes - 403 Calories
Exercise Bike - 20 minutes - 139 Calories
Elliptical - 20 Minutes - 387 Calories

+ 200 situps (40 side crunchers per side)
Weightlifting (various things)

(I do this cardio workout everyday & the situps... and the weightlifting every other day...)

wow, you did 125 minutes of cardio today + the crunches and weightlifting in one session?
I usually do 60-70 minutes of cardio in the morning and swimming for 800 yds in the evening.

Anyway, according to bodybuilding.com's calculator, elliptical machine burn calories as much as running at 6 mph? Can we trust the calories burn count provided by the machine???

If anything the count on the machine is going to be lower than actual because it doesn't know the weight of your legs/energy required to move them.

I think the elliptical actually burns a lot more than running... I'm always dripping with sweat by the time I get off it.

elliptical is better on your knees, though either is better than running on concrete

I feel you have to be hardcore to get results...

I'm only on day 15 of my workout, but I'm going for 6 weeks and see where I get.. I weightlift every other day, but do cardio and situps daily

Week 1

Day 1 ? 798
Day 2 ? 800
Day 3 ? 1000
Day 4 ? 1025
Day 5 ? 1019
Day 6 ? 1025
Day 7 ? 1112

Week 2

Day 8 ? 1134
Day 9 ? 1302
Day 10 ? 1217
Day 11 ? 1311
Day 12 ? 1347
Day 13 ? 1363
Day 14 ? 1474

Week 3

Day 15 - 1678

Total Burned = 17605 Calories
Pounds Lost From 17605/3500 = 5.03 (3500 calories per lb of fat)

So far in total weight lost in 3 weeks I've lost 12 lbs.. (was at 219lbs and am now at 207lbs)
