Well for one, swimming works almost EVERY muscle in your body. Running doesn't. So combining the two is a great way to train different muscle groups. I'd say that swimming is better than running for working out. It's zero impact, works every muscle, burns zillions of calories, gets you in shape quick! The only thing that keeps me from the pool is the added time it takes to go to the pool and the gym membership. With running, you can right straight out your door and it's very low cost. What is the benefit of combining the two types of exercises ?

If you did swim 6 days a week I would try to up the yardage. 800 yards isn't that long...
