OK, so I have spent the last 3 weeks working out 6 days a week.,

I swim 800 yards Mon., Wed., and Fri.

I run 30 min. on Sun. , Tues., and Thurs.

What is the benefit of combining the two types of exercises ?

Why not just stick with one ?

Why would you do that every day? And why wouldn't you also do weight training? Trying to look like a girl?

Swimming does more for upperbody while running does lower body. I swam competitively for years but never did much running so my legs weren't as toned as my upper body.

Well for one, swimming works almost EVERY muscle in your body. Running doesn't. So combining the two is a great way to train different muscle groups. I'd say that swimming is better than running for working out. It's zero impact, works every muscle, burns zillions of calories, gets you in shape quick! The only thing that keeps me from the pool is the added time it takes to go to the pool and the gym membership. With running, you can right straight out your door and it's very low cost. So that was a little OT...sorry.

right on! it's hard work plus you look like an idiot. I've tried martial arts training in the water and trust me, other patrons didnt like it at all :)

Both cardiovascular, but swimming will tone your body and legs, rather then just legs with running. If you dont mind drinking other peoples piss swimming is far better.

Swimming is zero impact? Tell that to my left shoulder, I had to have pieces of tendon removed and all the tendons in my rotator cuff shortened. Granted, he's swimming 800 yards 3 times a week and I was doing 6000 yards 6 times a week, but it will do a number on your joints if your stroke isn't great.

is the impact from running a positive thing for my body ?

Probably not. Running can mess up your knees and shins if you're not careful. Make sure you use good running shoes and try to avoid harder surfaces (concrete sidewalks, for instance).

If you did swim 6 days a week I would try to up the yardage. 800 yards isn't that long...

well, I am in pretty bad shape, and after 3 weeks I am just to the point where the 800 yards doesn't leave me burned to a crisp.

How should I go about gradually increasing my yardage ?

Here is my workout :

1x150 Freestyle (warmup)
2x25 drill (Butterfly) 15 sec. between
2x50 (freestyle) 15 sec. between
4x25 kick (freestyle) no rest
4x50 freestyle / breaststroke 30 sec. between
4x25 pull (freestyle) 10 sec. between
2x25 drill (Freestyle) 15 sec. between
1x50 Freestyle (warmdown)

There's nothing wrong with switching between the two - gives your other body half time to rest. More evenly excercises your body if you're not doing weights. Wish I could swim without looking like 5 year old though :(
