YAWT: My shoulder did somethin' funny last night doing a shoulder press.

Last night I was on my last set of Max-OT style shoulder press.

I got 5 up, and I wanted to push to a 6th rep....

halfway up I knew I should quit, but I pushed it up and my shoulder popped out of socket (or so it felt)

it popped out , I dropped the weight, and it popped back in all in a matter of moments.

I felt a little pain for about 30 seconds, and then it felt fine. I still went on to do latteral raises, and a few shrugs.

this morning it doesnt hurt.

I was wondering if my assumption, that this was a shoulder popping out of socket, is correct.

If so....is this bad ?

Well it definately can't be good! You took a risk continuing to lift after that happpened. Luckily you didn't further damage your shoulder.

you are very foolish to continue working shoulders after that happened. do you have a history of joints popping out of sockets?

happens to my knee all the time after my snowmobiling accident.

i should probably get it checked out. you should do the same.

I never do heavy weight on shoulder press and I never do full motion for two reasons...

The full motion is bad for the rotator cuff

-and-

it can pop your shoulder out of the socket

You popped shoulder out of socket, which is not good. Once you do it the first time, it is easier to do it the second....and so on.

And you should do dumbbells rather than flat bar...it allows for a little more natural motion of the shoulder joint.

I know all this cause one of my dad's good friends is a sports doctor (and internal) and used to be professional trainer and body builder (has consulted for several NFL football teams including the Raiders and Rams when they were in LA).

I was using dumbbells.

it's funny...because I never ever push it when I know I am done. Never ever ever do assisted reps.

But last night I was in a pissed off mood, and I wasn't focusing.

you're fine that happens to my shoulder all the time. it actually pops out more often when i swim than when i lift weights - the last time my shoulder popped out lifting was some time last year.

if it felt like it popped out, then it probably did.
if you're ok now, then consider yourself lucky.

mine popped out when i was doing lat pulldowns in high school,
but my shoulder was screwed up for 4 months &
track season (for shot put & discus throwing) was trashed.

I have lose liagments in my shoulders. I can drop my left shoulder without touching it about 2cm out of it's socket. It doesn't cause much pain. But only a 'very' small amount. Kind of like pinching your skin. My right shoulder I can drop it out but I have to press it out.

Doing weights has never made me do this though.

I checked it with a Dr and he said I just had very lose ligaments.
