I've been watch-less for a year and a half now after my Citizen Ecodrive flew off my wrist and hit a wall. it wasn't pretty. My dad wants to get me a new watch for christmas, and he's willing to spend at most $400. I like the subtle stainless style of the ecodrive, so something along the lines of that...any suggestions? about my only requirement is that it have a sapphire crystal.

The mere concept of spending more than 30$ on a watch astounds me. There's got to be something niftier to spend the money on.

I went through this last Christmas because my gf's parents wanted to buy me a nice watch in the $500 range. I did a lot of shopping, but everything that I would've considered nice for that sum of money was more like $1500 in reality. So I bought this. Definitely a steal for under $100, especially for an automatic. The only thing that sucks is that the material used to make the markers glow is kind of dim.

Still, as worn, it looks much more expensive than it actually is, and you could get it in two colors at this price and wear accordingly.

For $400 you can get the Tissot Seastar 1000.

It's the only 1) Swiss automatic, 2) diver-certified to 1000ft, and 3) sapphire crystal

for under $1000.

I somewhat agree, but i'd extend it to about 200-400.

I think $300-400 is the sweet spot.

It's about durability. If you get a $30 watch, the screen will get scratched, you'll have to change the batteries all the time, the band will wear away and fall apart.

If you spend $300-400, it's absolutely durable and scratch proof. It'll likely have an automatic movement so you'll never have to change the batteries. You basically have it forever, maintenece free.

If you spend $30 on a watch, you'll have to buy a few in the course of your lifetime. You'll probably end up spending about as much as someone who paid more for a half decent watch too.

Automatic watches are far from maintenance-free. They should be serviced after a few years of wear, and it is much costlier than a battery replacement. I still prefer mechanical watches, and have many of them, but I don't delude myself that they make sense from a practical standpoint.
