YAVR: Yet Another Vegetarian Rant

Do I attract stupid people or something? Am I somehow getting a giant "Come piss me off!" sticker slapped on my back every frickin' day?

Heading up to grab some lunch ... it's Friday, so the caf at work is serving chili. Nice, hearty, beefy, delicious chili. Awesome stuff. It's gone as soon as the first batch of students gets to it, so I head up early. Grab a bowl, and start loading up with meaty chili goodness - when next to me I just hear this disapproving/irritated/insulted explusion of air. You know, the kind those uppity people make when you offend their delicate beliefs.

I turn to look and there's this girl standing there, hands on hips, midway through lading up a bowl of vegetarian chili (yes, such foul stuff exists), just glaring at me like I've got "666" tattooed on my forehead. So naturally, I ask what the hell her problem is, and would she mind pissing off?

Out comes the veggie-rant, full force. Apparently, I'm killing myself by eating this chili, it's going to give me ulcers, and I'm a horrible human being who is Brutally Raping Mother Earth. Somehow I managed to keep myself from introducing her white hippie blouse to a bowlful of Campbell's.

I came to a compromise with myself, and settled for just telling her various things regarding animals which she should go do with them if she loves them so much.

I always think of that Steven Wright line, "if we're not supposed to eat animals, how come they're made of meat?"

Im a vegetarian (well, I eat eggs occasionally) but all my friends are meat eaters. Only reason I am a vegetarian is because I dont like meat (pretty hard to believe, yes?).

uh, because meat comes from animals which must die in order for the meat to get taken off of their bodies?

I realize that, but why not make new dishes that dont look like meat - afterall if you think eating meat is wrong why would u want anyone to mistakingly think you are eating meat?

EDIT: not to mention, to make a vege burger that tastes like a real burger - someone will have to kill an animal and taste the burger. So wouldnt that alone make eating a vege burger wrong, because animals were killed in order to make it?

because they like the taste/texture of meat... i don't think many vegetarians are really that concerned that someone will mistake them for a meat-eater

if having a veggie burger that is a reasonable approximation gets just a few people to eat less meat, in the long run, there will probably be less animals killed.

They're trying to "fit in" to the meat eating culture of McD's, Wendy, and the fifty other burger joints in the average city.

Hot tip here - it's not working. I'd sooner chew glass than those "hamburgers" you make.

Just sniff the air. You can usually smell it (veggers typically pass gas quite often)!

Oh yeah, I ate a tofu burger at Denny's once.. it tasted like rubber!

Why don't vegeterians eat eggs and cheese?

they do. vegans don't... they don't eat eggs because the chickens are kept in miserable conditions (they'll eat free range i guess...dunno tho) and no dairy because the baby cows don't get milk that way, and something to do with the condition the cows are kept in as well. or something like that.

i've been a veggie all my life. never made a big deal about it and never tried to force it down anyones throat. ON the other hand, I had "friends" who would try to trick me into eating meat. after a few such incidences they were no longer my friends.

would you find my experience any less offensive than yours?

No, vegans don't consume anything used or created by animals. No dairy, no eggs. They do not eat honey b/c bees create it, they don't eat leavened bread(bread made with yeast, which is alive) They don't wear leather shoes.

There's some other whack jobs that don't consume anything that kills the plant when you harvest it, which leaves you with fruits, legumes and a few other things.

I work with a bunch of vegetarians, but none of them are militant like that. Dumb broad.

btw, in my opinion, this girl probably was a recent "Convert" to vegetarianism and probably misses meat.

i don't try to force my convictions down their throat, what's their problem?? i know what it is, most of them feel guilty for eating meat (cause i know that they were all raised veggies) and can't stand the fact that i choose not to.

also, if it were just the once i could say mb it's funny, it's not funny the 4th time.

eh what kind of community did you live in where all your friends were raised to be veggies??

oh well yea i guess after the 4th time it gets old. i dunno. i don't think they were trying to force their convictions down your throat or anything, i bet they were just goofing off like any guy would.

I don't care if people don't want to eat meat, but it would piss me off if they acted like I was the devil for eating meat and made a big deal out of it.

i personally don't care if you don't eat meat, more for me. but please don't tell me how wrong i am, because it'll only make me eat more meat just to piss you off. and don't expect me to cater to your crap either. if we're going to mcd's for lunch, and you can't eat, then sucks to be you. i'm not driving all around town to find you a burger that looks like meat, tastes like meat, smells like meat, but isn't meat.
