YAVCT (Yet Another Video Card Thread)

I didn't get too many responses on the video forum, so i thought i'd try here.

so here's my list:

refurbed 9800 SE vs 9600 pro vs FIRE GL 128mb 256bit newegg ran out of the 9800 SE's, i guess, because it's no longer listed 🙁

my friend said he'd sell me his 9600pro for ~80. if you look on ebay, they're going for 100+ so i can't blame him if he wants more than 80 (im was hopnig not to spend more thna 80). i dont know how a 9800 SE stacks up vs a 9600pro. finally, i have no clue about the FIRE GL4. used anandtech product finder and that came up under the ati section, looks like a decent card, though im not sure how good of a deal it is for $90.

thanks all

The FireGL sucks. For one thing it's a workstation card, and for the other, from what I can gather, it's based on DX7 tech (according to rojakpot).
As for 9800SE vs. 9600P, it depends on whether the 9800SE is 128 or 256 bit and whether it's moddable (this isn't anything complicated or invasive, iirc you just have to install the Omega drivers and enable an option).
9800SE 256bit modded > 9800SE 128bit modded > 9800SE 256bit > 9600 Pro > 9800SE 128bit
(I'm unsure whether 128bit 9800SEs are moddable at all, but I've heard of some people doing it.)
You can tell whether it's 128 or 256bit by the position of the memory chips on the card. If they're only on one side of the GPU (in an "I" shape), it's 128 bit. If they're on two ("L" shape), it's 256 bit.
Most 9800SEs are 128 bit and not moddable, so unless you can confirm that the particular 9800SE you're getting is different, I'd suggest getting a 9600 Pro.
