when I was looking into Dysons 2 yrs ago, CR mentioned that the new ball dysons aren't that good. but they rated the DC17 highly, so I got that.

But playing devils advocate: I recently got my mom a Hoover for $100. I feel that gets the job done just as well as my Dyson.

vacuum her carpet with the hoover, then vacuum it again with the hoover until there's nothing left in the compartment. then, go over it with the dyson. i bet you'll pick up more stuff.

trust me, i tried it. both ways - hoover over dyson and dyson over hoover. pretty much the same result

Thinking of buying a DC28 Animal for ~370. Wife and I are getting tired of junk cleaners. Anybody have experience with the DC28?

I don't understand why CR rates Dysons so low compared to others. Everybody I know who has one loves it.

Because they are expensive compared to other brands. They are overpriced when bought new. Lot's of vacuums have as much suction power that cost a lot less. Also because it's a bagless you get to inhale dust when emptying the bin, whereas with a bag vacuum you don't. The filters aren't cheap to replace either. The whole "doesn't lose suction" is silly too. Ok it doesn't lose suction, but a regular vacuum does? What like 10% maybe? You wouldn't even notice that. Besides by the time it loses suction it's time to replace the bag or filter and it's back up to 100% again.

OP got a sweet deal for $25. I remember a Canadian vacuum company, Fantom. They are out of business now, but were one of the first to make bagless vacs that really worked. I have a relative who worked at a Hoover store that used a Fantom to cleanup at night just because it did such a good job.

My only issue with Dyson is that you do need to wash out the "canister" so it's not quite as simple as bag. Plus, it is messier than a bag to empty, even though they claim it's cleaner. All that dust flies up and sticks to the outside of it unit.

I wash out my canister once every few months. The water that I flush through it comes out black. But, still cheaper than buying bags and I never smell dust coming out of it.

Purchased 2 Dyson DC17 refurbs from Fry's for $199 each. Gave one to my dad and he thinks it is the best thing since sliced bread.
