On my way home from work, I take an on-ramp to a major highway. This on-ramp obviously puts me in the right hand lane. About 100 yards up the highway is an off-ramp on the left side of the highway, which I need to take to get home.

The douchebags in the left lane would not allow me to merge into the left lane so i could take the off-ramp. I figured I could go down the road a little bit and turn around. Nope, they still would not let me over and there was no room to even attempt it. I ended up going about 10 miles out of my way.

I could have pulled over onto the right side of the road at one of the restaurants to turn around, but trying to cross 3 lanes of traffic at rush hour isn't easy or fun.

why they made the off-ramp the way they did is beyond me. this isn't the 1st time i;ve had this happen either but luckily i was able to get turned around before.

What would you do in this situation?

edited: off-ramp is on the left side of the highway, not right liek i originally stated.

I'm sure I read it wrong but I'm a little confused.

The off ramp is on the left side, not the right side - is my guess.

Your only other choice is to risk a wreck at highway speed. Good luck!

I'd pay attention and make sure I'm in the left lane so I could get off when my exit comes up.

as soon as i get onto the highway, i almost immediately have to get into the left hand lane. if there is traffic in the left lane i don't have much time to get into the left lane, and none if they won't let me in. its not like i have 3 miles to get into the left lane, i have about 100 yards. from getting onto the highay until the point i need to get off of the highway

If you don't want to be put into this situation, you need to purposely go out of the way to enter onto the highway an exit before your current entrance.

That's what I was thinking. Probably the best situation.

Either that, or just be extremely aggressive when switching lanes. While I don't condone that type of driving, people will generally let you in front of them when you make it clear that they have to stop or there'll be an accident.

Well, if you don't want to find another way, then you have to keep going this way. Or continue to do like you do now when you miss the exit, drive the 10 miles and turn around. I know it's a pain, but it sounds like a safer option.
