YATT: Yet another tipping thread. do you tip when you get takeout?

So i'm at Unos Pizzeria and i'm getting take out. i pay the cashier and she says something to me like, oh you don't have to tip.

well, i never had any intention of doing so but afterwards i started to wonder, hmm, should i have tipped?? is she going to be spitting in my food now??

i think from now on i'm going to tip on takeouts if i have to pay before i get my food.

My friend and I order from this small mom and pop pizza restaurant about every other week. We always go and get take out since they don't deliver. We always leave them 1 or 2 bucks because their pizza is the freaking best and we've never had any problems there. Big commercial places I rarely tip if I take out but since I'm a regular to mom and pop shop I always do since I wouldn't want them to go out of business.

I consider tipping for good service, like if your server provides good service or for the fact that someone had to drive to my place to get me my food. As far as I'm concerned, my "tip" for carry out was the cost of the food.

Just tonight at Papjohns. Bill was $18.98 and I gave him a $20 and told them to keep it. First time I ever did it so its kinda freaky seeing this thread.

I only tip if there's a waiter/waitress involved, and I would tip if I ever used one of those places that carries it to your car for you.

I don't see any reason to tip when you drive there and pick it up. What should you tip for? Them handing it to you? If they brought it out to your car, then it would be different or if you really like the place and want to tip. There's a small Indian restaraunt I go to quite a bit and it's a self serve buffet, but the food is sooooo damn good and the guy that owns the place is extremely cool so I always tip.

Sure, I tip a couple of bucks every time I get a quarter pounder from McD's. Those people work hard and get paid crappy wages. They deserve a tip.

No, I usually don't tip takeout workers. At the papa Johns I work at, the people who work on the inside of the store usually only get tips if the customer feels that they went out of their way to take care of them. They usually only get tipped 3 or 4 times a week.

Nope. And it kinda insults me when I see the jar labeled TIPS at Subway (yes, in bold, caps and underlined). WTF, now we gotta tip everybody we come into contact with?

Just do what "nik" would do in this case and you'll do no wrong.

On a side note, what's with all the food places that put a tip jar by the cash register? (like Starbucks) Next thing we're going to see is a tip jar in McDonalds.
