For me, it's not a question of effort. It's just that I cannot fathom the basis for this ongoing argument. Who can we blame for starting it, and how did this concept become so ingrained in female America? Who ordained that the natural at-rest position of a toilet is with the seat down? If anything, it would be with the seat and lid down, but I never hear anyone complaining about the lid being open. Seat up or down -- what's the difference?

Is it a courtesy thing? Is putting the toilet seat down for a woman's convenience the last vestige of chivalry in our society? Is it because of germs or general ickiness? Surely there must be some logical reason for such widespread behavior.

I remember one woman in particular complaining about her husband leaving the toilet seat up. She said that, if he left it up, she would go to sit down for a pee and fall into the toilet. Right. Everyone suggested she learn to look before plopping her ass down on the toilet. It's not difficult. I thought we all learned proper potty use as toddlers.

My solution? I just close the thing when I leave the bathroom. That way, the room looks more attractive because there's no gaping maw of biological waste disposal dominating the view. As a bonus, no one ever complains about having the toilet in a less-than-optimal position for seated urination. Why having the lid closed is any different, as far as effort is concerned, than having the seat up, I'll never know.

I'm with you. I always make it a point to close the lid. This should be the standard for males and females alike. Totally removes this stupid argument.

like it takes too much effort for a guy to put the seat back down.

It takes even less effort for a woman to put the seat down before using it...remember, gravity is on your side.

I've been using my penis now for 21 years.. It took maybe a year to start using it right and it took maybe another 5 to hone my skills. Now, I am an expert with the penis and ranged relieving.. I'm at such a high level that I never even have to put the seat up in the first place. I NEVER hit the seat and I have an infinite attack rating when it comes to hitting the inside of the bowl. My secret is to aim slight past the water at the side above it. Then, I give that bowl a beating of its life.

Some of you may be jealous at my amazing skills.. But remember, it takes practice every day multiple times per day. And remember my motto "The penis is a two-hand or one-handed weapon of doom that requires the utmost in intelligence, constitution, and dexterity."

yea, i don't get why some guys don't put the toilet seat down. I share a bathroom with a girl and i always put it down for her, c'mon guys it isn't that hard to pull it down, hell just kick the damn thing down. Sometimes it pisses (not toilet seat related) how people lack common decency. examples: people using cell phones in a library. yea, i really hate it when people are just really oblivious of their actions.

Well, I don't like the seat up, but she was just over reacting to it. All she had to do was put the seat down herself. I don't like how toilets look when the seat is up. It just looks nasty to me.

Well this is how I see it:
Guy sees toilet seat down. Puts it up. Unleashes his fury. Done.
Girl sees toilet seat up. Puts it down. Unleashes her fury. Done.

That works around here

YES! i really like the idea of putting the lid down, then both will have some sort of responsibility.

About it being manners to put the seat back down, it, in a way, is manners. If a girl uses a cup and just leaves in in the sink, and you want to use that cup to drink water next, wouldn't it be rude that she just left the cup in the sink, and didn't wash it and put it back on the right spot?

So are you saying I should or should not pee in the cup?
