For me, it's not a question of effort. It's just that I cannot fathom the basis for this ongoing argument. Who can we blame for starting it, and how did this concept become so ingrained in female America? Who ordained that the natural at-rest position of a toilet is with the seat down? If anything, it would be with the seat and lid down, but I never hear anyone complaining about the lid being open. Seat up or down -- what's the difference?
Is it a courtesy thing? Is putting the toilet seat down for a woman's convenience the last vestige of chivalry in our society? Is it because of germs or general ickiness? Surely there must be some logical reason for such widespread behavior.
I remember one woman in particular complaining about her husband leaving the toilet seat up. She said that, if he left it up, she would go to sit down for a pee and fall into the toilet. Right. Everyone suggested she learn to look before plopping her ass down on the toilet. It's not difficult. I thought we all learned proper potty use as toddlers.
My solution? I just close the thing when I leave the bathroom. That way, the room looks more attractive because there's no gaping maw of biological waste disposal dominating the view. As a bonus, no one ever complains about having the toilet in a less-than-optimal position for seated urination. Why having the lid closed is any different, as far as effort is concerned, than having the seat up, I'll never know.

YES! i really like the idea of putting the lid down, then both will have some sort of responsibility.
About it being manners to put the seat back down, it, in a way, is manners. If a girl uses a cup and just leaves in in the sink, and you want to use that cup to drink water next, wouldn't it be rude that she just left the cup in the sink, and didn't wash it and put it back on the right spot?

So are you saying I should or should not pee in the cup?
