YATippingThread - Valets

I would never use valet. Let some dude drive my car? Fuck that.
I'll walk farther, thank you very much.

sorry, but I'd rather drive up to a restaurant and walk inside. Especially if it's a nice place - I'm not walking blocks (maybe further). And my wife, i'd never hear the end of it (our loafers are a little more comfortable than their heels)

It's just your car. It is only a possession and it can be fixed, cleaned, replaced etc. If I am going out to a nice restaurant or staying at a good hotel that offers valet parking I am going to use it ... and tip the valet.

What if the dude has really bad B.O. and you do not have leather seats?

Went to a restaurant that had valet which saved us a 10-second walk. The 15-or-so of us all finished dinner then walked out and 3 of us handed the 1 valet our tickets... it seemed kind of stupid to all stand there and wait while he drove each car up the 10 feet, individually... then tip the guy for doing that.

I really hate valet. I haven't been anywhere that actually needed it yet. These aren't Vegas casinos.

The you end up trying to sell the car after unsuccessfully having the interior cleaned and you find you still can't get rid of the beast, so you simply leave it in a bad neigborhood with the keys tossed through the open drivers window onto the seat.

Drop the wife off at the entrance and then go park yourself?

$8 to park at the garage down the street from where i was going or a couple less bucks to valet (even with the tip). no free parking downtown.

I tip them when I use them...usually like $2. Maybe more if I see them run and they're quick in getting my car. Same thing with a bellhop at a hotel - though I usually just carry my own bags. I worked as a bellhop one summer in high school and really appreciated when I received tips because I was only getting minimum wage, so I return the favor.

is it proper protocol to tip before, after, or both? I just used valet parking for the first time and tipped $2 after, nothing before.

As a former valet, it's better to tip before (as in before the guy goes to get your car, not when you first come in)

i drive a manual and will likely always drive a manual. i only trust one person to drive my car and that person is me.
