Tipping is meant to be a pleasurable gesture, one that marks exceptional service, creating a bond between a guest and a hotel staffer or tour guide. However, as service becomes increasingly personalized -- airport greeter; bathroom attendant; private chef -- the potential pitfalls begin to add up.

so i read that article which lead to this train of thought.
i understand tipping waiters/waitresses. they make like $2/hr.

but door men, bell hops, cab drivers, massages (legit, not the happy ending type), tennis coaches???

it seems like everyone has their hand out. i'm surprised there isnt an OCCUPYTipping movement!

your thoughts?

yeah WTF that article is insane. tipping someone who clears your shoes after golfing $10? yeah..

some of those are fucking nuts.

Unless a bathroom attendant is holding my pen15 and wiping my ass, I'm not tipping them.

Sad how little those without things know.

It's usually those that probably would be better off going into a service profession that make these types of complaints as well.

Tipping and minimum wage aren't bed mates.

In many fine restaurants you are tipping a guy making more than most schmucks out there and happy to do so.

Bathroom attendants just make going to the bathroom more awkward. I always feel like they are judging how thoroughly I wash my hands afterward.

You are just proving how little you get out or the 'clubs' you frequent.

There is a difference between the attendant in a high priced place that caters to you and the one in a low priced place trying to shake you down.

"Most guests remember to tip drivers about $3 in the local currency, but greeters are often overlooked"

I don't understand...are you supposed to tip your Walmart greeter now?

I tip waiters at restaurants - if they give me good service. I tip cab drivers - that's normal too. I tip skycaps, because they save me the hassle of lugging my suitcases all over the airport and waiting in line forever. I'll throw change in at a checkout counter of a store if I have a few loose coins from my purchase there. But shoot - doorman, bellhop, porter, room attendent, driver, server, restroom attendants, concierge, private chef, tour guide, hotel staffer, airport greeter, tennis instructor, fitness coach, scuba instructor, babysitter, massage therapist, golf valet? Where does it end?!

I'm glad I'm not rich enough to afford most of those personalized services in the article :awe:

I go to the bathroom to piss and that's about it. I'm not into getting sucked off by the bathroom attendant or whatever you do with them. Do you have to start shit in every thread?

lol, not at all; but when I go out the places usually have bathroom attendants that keep it perfect.

I like it that way. When I was a kid I had those dudes trying to spray $1 colognes on me or throwing towels at me.

Grow up!
