YaTippingT: $7 food in 5hrs, $1.50 tip -> Feeling guilty

You pay me $2-3/hr I keep my tips, rather than you pay me minimum wage or better and I turn in my tips and have you divide them out.

How about option C - if the owner can afford it, pay the staff a liveable wage, and the staff gets to keep their tips as well.

No way...I don't know anyone that's made being a career out of being a server hurting. They probably aren't pulling in $50k plus always, but I know two that make over that.

In high school I was paid $3/HR yet averaged $400 for working 4 days about 6 hours each

If servers were actually paid, tipping wouldn't be as much of an obligation as it is now. Server's could actually be tipped according to their level of service without feeling guilty that they're not making ends meet.

It's never been about the waiters complaining, it's the consumer.

They expect to get the same priced meal and not have to tip.

It IS up to you to pay their wages, in a sense. Most waiters/waitresses work for much less than minimum wage with the expectation that tips earned will give them a livable income. If you don't like that go through a drive-through or get your food yourself.

Firstly, how can that legally be the case, it's called minimum wage for a reason. Secondly, walking from one end of the room to another carrying a hot plate of food is hardly rocket science, thirdly if they don't like it they can get another job, they can't expect me to pay for them, they applied for a job knowing the wage, live with it or move on.

Don't post in threads when you don't know how people in the service industry in the US are paid. You don't need to post in every thread to boost your post count.

OP is a cheap dumbass. If I patronize the place often, I'm going to spend more than $7 in five hours and I'm going to leave a bigger tip. And even if I don't patronize the place often I'm going to leave a bigger tip.

I was responding to someone else, as I should and can.

Aside from that, are you saying that in America the minimum wage means nothing?!

Minimum wage does not apply to certain jobs, one is where the position earns tips. Even if the minimum wage is $8, a waiter/waitress will only get paid $2-3/hr. If they're not able to earn minimum wage thru tips, the business is supposed to offset the difference but if you were the business and had to do this, would you keep the waiter/waitress? No, something that people like the retarded OP and Zerocool don't seem to understand. And like them, you seem to think waiting is easy and only deserves minimum wage which no can live on.

Again, go find some Chav forum to troll in.

Wow that's a retarded system, I still wouldn't tip, if they don't like the job leave. It's not my job to pay peoples wages for satisfactory service, particularly when the job they are doing is simple.

I was in america recently bought 4 beers, totalling 20 dollars, when the bill arrived it said 30 dollars. What the fuck 50% tip. I think not, I left 2 dollars, as the service was fine, the fucker followed me out of the bar asking for more money, saying I hadn't paid it all!

Tipped service personnel fall under different wage laws in many states. A tipped service worker is typically anyone who makes more than $30 in tips a month. In a few states they are compensated up to the federal minimum wage if they don't make enough tips. In my state, specifically, all tipped service works are completely exempt from the Federal minimum wage law and are not compensated if they fail to meet it with tips. Thats why I rarely leave less than 20% or $2 even if I only spent $5 for a complete meal.

That is a bizarre system but not my (as the customer) problem.

Well, you're lying. They probably charge you $30 b/c they knew you were an asshat. No place is going to automatically add the tip to $20 in beer.

And the system isn't retarded, people are paid for their service and you have the ability to decide. If service people were paid a straight wage, what incentive would they have to provide you with good service, especially if they're only paying you minimum wage?

Go troll elsewhere, all of your threads are about lame attempts to dump on America or I'm a bisexual bipolar attention whore.

Again, great job of derailing another thread.

It's not your problem if you never go back to the restaurant, and your conscience is okay with basically treating somebody else as your slave.

It is most definitely your problem if you enjoy the restaurant and plan on going back. Good luck with your "clean" food after not leaving an appropriate tip on your last visit.

If you haven't figured it out yet, wait staff working for tips is supposed to increase the quality of service as they get paid directly based on that service.

I wasn't lying. In the UK a tip is like a compliment for extra good service, it's not my job to pay other peoples wages.

Also, how the fuck is talking about tipping and how much you should tip in a topic about tipping derailing?!

I can't comprehend why you would go to a restaurant, and think at the end of the meal, "here's the money for the food I ate" and "here's your wages"... Insane.

Sure, your one time in America, you get charged a $10 tip on $20 in beer and thankfully this thread appears for you to tell it. You would have thought, you would have asked why then and learned the answer instead of coming in and derailing the thread. You're derailing the thread b/c instead of trolling in some Chav forum you have to act stupid and need to be educated on how things work here.

No different than any of your dozen gun threads, people answer your question and then you keep changing things in some hope that you're going to win the argument.

Walking from one end of the room to another carrying a hot plate of food isn't rocket science. Refraining from dumping that plate of food on annoying jerks that treat people in the service industries like they're too stupid to get any other job and therefore deserve to be disregarded and belittled is, however, a major talent.

I don't know why anyone would come to America if they hated it so much...oh yeah, so they can take advantage of the system.

We have signs up in many restaurants around here near the beach that pretty much call out the foreignor ignoring their travel guide on customs.

One of the latest is not only to back out the 18% tip on parties greater than 8, but they back it out again on the total and dine and dash.

Fucking sad.

yeah he is trying too hard here. He not only knows the wage system but then wants to keep playing that he doesn't.

When I am out eating or in general good service is what I expect. I can easily order anything online or make a meal at home.

$1.50 for a $7 bill? fair. but since you were there so damn long i would have thrown in a $10 and called it a day. its still a damn good deal.

tipping has gotten fucked up. it used to be you tipped 15% IF the service was good. Now you are expected to tip 25+% for shitty service. fuck that. you are a bad waitress you get nothing. You are average you get %15 you are great you get more.
