So I go to best buy to look at some big screen tvs...see nothing that I like so I end up buying a few DVDs. So after waiting in 1 line for what seemed like eternity I am shepherded to yet another line after the registers for people waiting to exit the store. This line was moving even slower than the register lines. After 2 minutes I got mad and just cut everybody, walked to the front of the line and left the store. I saw a few best buy employess checking the contents of everybody's cart and shopping bags, I would have been waiting on line for another 10 minutes. Of course these employees had somethng to say about this but I just breezed past them.

What about the stores with security guards? These were just teenagers who were working the front, doing the checking but can a security guard detain/arrest you? What are my rights here? I already paid and in theory I am holding items which belong now to me. Can a store legally not allow you to leave once you've shelled out money for merchandise until they check you out? I usually don;t have problems with getting checked at the exit, but not when I have to wait 10 minutes to leave the store. Plain rediculous!!

Unless you agree to it in your membership terms (think Costco) stores basically can't do anything about you breezing past them. If they try to stop you or touch you, you could possibly have a lawsuit in your favor on your hands.

Right. I walk by the receipt people at Fry's all the time. They never try to stop me.

Tell them to call the cops if they don't like it. If they do, hang around and express your displeasure at your unlawful detainment. If they don't, leave.

If they touch you, never work a day again in your life. I'm usually not one to suggest frivelous litigation, but this practice is just plain STUPID.

They can't make you stop. Just walk by them and if they ask you to stop, just say no thanks.

The stupidest one is at the various warehouse clubs.

Here you are with a pallet full of stuff and a receipt as long as your arm and this guy is going to look it over????

I never have a problem at the warehouse clubs. Not only is it in you membership agreement (read: you have to do it, and you knew ahead of time that you had to do it.) but there is never a line, at least not at any of them I've been to.

If you don't like the practice you don't need to become a member at the warehouse club. It's that simple. And if a place like Best Buy tries to make you do it you can tell them to stick it because you never signed an agreement.

I'm kinda waiting for someone at BB to ask to see my receipt, just so I can say "no thanks." and walk off. I haven't gotten the chance to do that yet. :(

I went to Worst Buy last night and saw the Norcent DVD player listed for $30, so I picked one up for our shop.

The sign at the stack of DVD players was hand written at $2X.XX (roughly $30). However, after grabbing the reciepts and leaving I noticed they charged me $0 and gave me a $10 rebate.

No big deal really, save for the fact I would not have bought the fvcker if I had known rebates were involved.

Now I must go back and haggle with a manager and waste my time.

In my opinion Best Buy is a "Devil" company.

anyeay. yes the lines to get out suck. I always just cut through and walk out. I have been asked a few times to stop and wait and i just say "No thanks" There is really nothing they can do.

Only time i actually wait is at Sams club. Even there i do not think they do it to really chatch theifs. Just to catch someone who is trying to get a bunch of stuff for free.
