YAST: Killing Out of Mercy w/ pics

Hey, the other day I was walking out to my car when I noticed a squirrel that was laying in an unusal position. I approached the animal and as I got closer it attempted to run away by crawling with only its front paws. It was obvious that it was paralyzed from the waist down, perhaps just being run over or something to that effect. I let the animal be, but I mentioned to my fiance that it might have been kinder to just put it out of its misery. When do you guys feel that it is appropriate to 'kill out of kindness'.

It certainly looks like the animal was trying to cope with it's handicap - I say let it live. Of course we have no way of knowing it is suffering or not 🙁

Let it live something else will kill it in no time. I have seen many Chipmunks and squirels do this not sure why it happens so much, Ussually after a cat attacks it and get bored.

Call animal control and see what they say.

Don't waste their time, they have bigger problems to deal with.

Leave it alone or smack it in the head, either way it will be dead soon.

My expert guess would be the squirrel fell and broke its' back.

I agree with Viper GTS about not bothering animal control.

Look at the last pic...its left knee looks banged up. Probably run over or glanced off a bumper (they sometimes hop straight up if they see no way out).

Don't kill it. I'm sure there is a personal injury lawyer out there who would be happy to take this case.

I probbably would have put it in some kind of container and taken it to the humane society.

Real World Flash:

It's a squirrel. They are considered a pest.

The humane society has better things to do than mess with it.

It's the humane society's business to deal with animals so it would not have been inappropriate for him to contact them. That is what they're here for.

What are they going to do? put it through 6 months of physical therapy? Its the freakin food chain. The humane society would tell you to humanely let something kill it mercilessly in the wild.

They could put the squirrel down for example. Who said anything about physical therapy?
