YAST: Black Widow at my house *pics*

that doens't look like a black widow. i thought black widows had an hourglass on the back but that spider just has a red stripe.

The underside of it's abdomin has the true hourglass shape. I just didn't get a good underside pic.

argh...we had some around our house. i asked my teacher about this and she said its fairly common around rain season. i'm in da bay.
 
Had a true black widow (black back - hourglass on abdomen) in a bag of grapes at work a few weeks back. It happens a lot more that you'd be aware of. One year, we got like 15 black widows through the summer. This one was found by a customer, though. Thankfully, they didn't freak out about it. Just gave the bag to me to take care of.

They're harmless unless you REALLY mess with them. And the poison can only kill small children or old people, not a full grown, healthy adult. Just hurts BAD!

My dad was always on me about being too leary of spider bites. I went into his shed and found it absolutely infested. Killed 7 black widows and these big spiders that I don't know what they were. The poison just got them mad and they attacked (the shovel OTOH was quite effective). Also got rid of three web sacks using a lighter. Interesting, the baby spiders popped out like pop corn when I ignited the web sack.

SIMILAR GROUPS: (1) All other spiders lack a hourglass-shaped or split hourglass-shaped marking on underside of abdomen and/or comb of serrated bristles on last tarsal segment of 4th pair of legs and 8 eyes with 2 lateral pairs almost touching.

The bite of the black widow is painful and may cause death if medical attention is not sought immediately. The venom of this spider is highly neurotoxic and respiratory failure can occur if appropriate medications are not administered at once.

Whoa! That's crazy! I'm happy I don't live in a place with spiders everywhere! :disgust: I kill every spider I see! I can't stand them!
