Thanks, eh - someone told me it was a Yellow Garden Spider like Eli said. Pretty common around here I guess. First one I've ever seen in person though - or is that in arachnid ;)

I'm getting chills just looking at that, man!
How can you make yourself get close enough for that pic? That's gotta be under 10ft.

Was just stopping by my brother's house and his wife told me about the spider in the back yard so ventured back and took some handeld shots. Would have liked to set up with a tripod and work up better focus and depth of field but, what'ya do. The spider was gone the next time I went back.

I was 4' away (Minimum focal distance for the 70-200 f4L I was using is 3.9') I think lirion said he's working within 3" of his subject! So I'm about a football field away in that respect.

I'll be ordering a 500D (diopter - closeup lens) which will allow me to get in a bit closer with my existing gear and bring subjects like that spider full frame. Not quite $$$ ready to step into the real world of macro just yet, but I agree with lirion's modus operandi of getting in as close to the subject as possible. That's just good stuff!

These spiders are very cool.

I get a couple in my garden each year, towards end of summer.

Last year, I had a good sized one with a really nice web. I got bored and kept it well fed with an assortment of ants, pill bugs, and small crickets. That sucker ate like a king :). It would go away for a couple days and come back bigger (perhaps it molted?).

Anyway... I noticed this really interesting behavior. Once when I was messing with it I musta freaked him/her out by dropping bugs into their web. He/she was sitting in the middle of the web and started shaking the web back and forth like crazy. The web was literally moving +/- 1 inch. I assumed the intent was to knock a presumed intruder off the web but it was very interesting to watch.
