YASP (Yet another SARS post)-- SARS could be Chinese bio-weapon: Russian expert

Lemme just say this as well... If it was a weapon, I would go for a higher fatality rate than just 6%. I'd go for 100%.

sigh.. it is not yet a weapon, it is like a beta version or something lower than that.. .
well, where would u find a hybrid of two viruses , anywhere beside labs..

Sure, it could be a weapon. Not all weapons work as hoped, SARS *could be* one of those. Despite it's low deathrate for a weapon, it spreads fast and makes it's victims very sick. It is now thought that it causes permanent scarring in the lungs of it's survivors and many recovering victims suddenly got really sick again.

I don't think it is a weapon, but if it turned out to be a weapon(or meant as one) it wouldn't be too surprising. It does have most of the qualities that one would desire in a Biological weapon.

I tought about that myself. What if SARS is/was not in it finished weapons grade form and accidently got loose in the wild. Think about it. It has mutated 3 times since it was 'discovered'. Thus all treatment for it keeps changing too..... What better weapon then one that takes the form of a new virus, and can not be cured nor can it be trapped (Keeps mutating)

From what I've heard on the NPR (various guests bring various credibility, remember that) SARS could have as easily originated from some bird or pig in China as anything else. The chances of this being a "beta test" (LOL) of a weapon is dumb. Why would a country release a chemical warfare agent on their own capital city, killing thousands of their own people, and basically their entire tourism industry? Or I suppose, a better question would be...why would a country be reckless enough to let that happen? Either the Chinese govt. is full of people who ride the short bus and wear helmets or the Russian dude is wrong 🙂

if it was a bio weapon, wouldn't it be:
1. More deadly? At 3% death rate, it hardly seems like a weapon.
2. used against other people? So far china (including HK) has suffered the most from SARS.

I have a gut feeling this might be a bioweapon that was prematurely released.

1. But the death rate is increasing quite rapidly, and the viral strain is a spinoff a common cold virus - but why is it so hard to stop? They've found that patients that have been released after thinking they were cured are still infecting people. They're also finding that it's causing permanent scar tissue in the lungs.

2. It probably wasn't supposed to be released yet.

3. As several doctors have pointed out, the death rate is much smaller than what we commonly see with Flus and Pneumonias. However, given that fact, why is China trying so hard to quarentine it - and why did they intentionally under-report the spread by tenfold, until disclosing the real figures recently? I heard a recent report that SARS maybe capable of contaminating the sewage system and spreading that way.

Doesn't seem like a very good bio-weapon. You'd probably get the same results by sending a guy who doesn't wash his hands after #2 into Times Square...

You're already talking about 80% of the population within the vicinity of Times Square. 😉
