Cops usually don't search your car over a speeding ticket. If she had reacted like a reasonable human being, a speeding ticket is all that would have happened to her.

Your not reading what was already posted...sure the mother was a dipshit...but the lone cop and yes it was just one cop who did the shooting came upon the scene and didn`t bother to ask any of the cops who were already on the scene what the circumstances were.

Instead he just fired.......none of the other cops had their weapons drawn...this was a lone rogue cop who wanted to shoot his weapon at a van that he was not informed had children inside!!

The big question is will it be a high speed or slow speed chase? The family is unarmed. I don't agree with the mother but if you are on your last dime and then handed a $400 ticket that will set some people over the edge.

for their own safety, peepul have a right to take proper precautions, such as making sure they arent pulling over in an isolated place with a cop. there have been cops that were serial killers, rapists, thieves, shake downers, etc...ive read about stuff like that in bay area newspapers even in the last month

Can't they just let them go but still file the ticket + another ticket for fleeing the scene? Basically it would go in their mail or just come straight out of their pay cheque or something. Perhaps they'd even lose their right to fight it because of the fact that they fled the scene. Though I guess if that was possible it could be dangerous. Bad cops could just look at random license plate numbers and file tickets. Though if they made it so it requires video evidence of the situation and the license plate has to be visible in the video I suppose such a system could work.

There are situations where it's just not worth pursuing if it's going to have to involve violence to pursue. This was one of them. But then had the cop let them go, and they turn out to be some group of criminals going to rob a bank then it would look bad on the cop. So I imagine this is a tough situation for a cop to gauge in the heat of the moment.

Can't win! Waggy suggested that cops should perform the pit maneuver instead of shooting the tire. That would be far, FAR more likely to flip a vehicle with a high center of gravity!

He got fired for being a dumb ass but fortunately he has a bright future if he wants with the Albuquerque police department where there is little issue with wildly shooting at anything spooky or shiny or anything that makes a funny noise.

Bad shoot IMHO. There was no immediate danger to anyones life when they fled. They should have just pursued and put the vehicle to a hard stop. If he had shot while being assaulted by the kids and mother I would have less of a problem with it.

Yeah, I agree. Even though he was shooting out the tires, ricochets and other weird physics happen with fired projectiles. The whole family deserved to be tazed though.
