My rig is in my Sig, the OS is windows 2000.

The current HD, is on a SATA dongle, its a 250GB WD2500JB.

Link to the dongle

When trying to install the HD on SATA, i dont know how to properly set it up on the goofy ass abit controller, the settings appear to be poorly translated.

Under specifications for the motherboard Here They dont say which SATA controllers are on the motherboard, i know it has 2, the Intel ICH is 2, and a Silicon Image Controller is the other 2 SATA ports. I also know that the Intel ICH has lower CPU overhead so id rather use ports on that controller.

In the online manual listed Here I *think* i know how to properly configure the SATA controller, but again this is a weird setup in the bios ive never encountered before. (and i have set up SATA drives and installed windows before).

The settings i am using in the BIOS are as follows: Under OnChip IDE Device
IDE Bus Master - Enabled (as i understand this is for legacy support for DOS, and shouldnt effect anything on or off)
On-Chip IDE-1 Controller: Enabled (i believe this is the IDE controller there is only physical IDE controller)
SATA Mode: IDE (this is the only option i can set it to that doesnt "grey out" the other options in the BIOS)
On-Chip Serial ATA: Combined mode (as i understand it this means the IDE and SATA controller are both enabled)
PATA IDE Mode: Secondary (again i *THINK* this means the SATA controller will be used for the primary HD controller, the only thing on EIDE in this rig is the CDRW).

Things that confuse the hell outta me:

1. With this combination of settings, there is no raid controller splash screen during the BIOS boot. Every other SATA controller ive used (that supports raid) has some kind of splash screen with a "press ctrl + whatever to configure" option, i have never seen this screen even with combinations of settings that i dont think will work.

2. With this combination of settings, the SATA HD is not detected in windows using the disk abit provided. The floppy boot disk however has 4 drivers, 3 Intel drivers, one for AHCI, and 2 for the ICH6 controller, one is ends in "D" for the model number, the other ends in "E" I have no friggin idea which one is the correct to use. The 4th driver is the Silicon Image driver. I have tried just installing all of the drivers in windows setup, no go, and each driver individually, no go.

3. I dont know which SATA port is on which controller, my *GUESS* is SATA1 is on the Intel SATA controller, but i dont know how to tell for sure. I have tried also to move the the SATA plug from SATA 1, to SATA4 to move it to the other controller, no luck.

4. I dont know how to even tell if the SATA dongle is working or not with these current configuration problems, It could simply be the dongle not working at all with the mobo or drive, it DOES get warm to the touch after some use. I have checked and double checked the wiring and connections. The 4 prong power is plugged in, The SATA cable obviously is, and the Dongle itself plugs directly into the IDE port of the drive.

Thanks in advance for any help guys, this is a doosie, and as you can see, i have troubleshot the hell out of this before coming here, and linked all the documentation i have available to me. Please help!!

Okay, i tried every combination of possible settings in the BIOS. No luck.

Back to EIDE I go, thats trash on this board too, There is 1 ide port, and if i daisy chain the HD and CDROM, windows wont autodetect the cdrom every restart unless i "search for new hardware" in the device manager after every restart. So windows will find it, and i can use it, but i cant enable DMA without a restart so it runs like crap.

Im done with abit, this is the 3rd quirky board ive had in a row from them.
