Yet Another Rig Critique But Mostly Me Bragging

Today I had the privilege of ordering the parts for my boss's new computer. Tell me if I made any major mistakes.

Retail P4-1.5 w/ 2* 128 RIMM's included
Asus P4T
Lian-Li PC60USB Aluminum Case
Enermax 430W Switching PS (P4 Compatible)
Tekram DC390U3W U160 Scsi Controller
(1) Quantum Atlas 10K II 9.2 gig U160 HD
(1) IBM 60GXP 60 gig HD
Plextor Ultraplex 40x
Hercules Game Theater XP
Intel Pro/100+ NIC
Keyboard - Optical mouse - Floppy

He already has a GF2 Pro and Plextor burner that I'm going to transfer to this system once everything arrives.

Most of it is coming from Hypermicro and Directron. Total was about 2K.

I don't know why you'd go through the expense of an U160 controller and only a 9.1GB 10K RPM drive. Sure it's quick, but you'd actually get substantially more performance if you used two or three 60GXPs and either a Promise FT100TX2 or the Adaptec 2400.

If you're going to go with SCSI, why mix and match. Go all the way and get 15K RPM or larger 10K RPMs.

Booting off the Atlas II, and using the IBM for storage. Have you seen how much 72 gig SCSI drives cost?

Oh yeah, and no amount of 60GXP's are going to make up for having an access time twice as high as the Atlas II.

I would of gotten a T-bird or Palomino with DDR, but that's personal preference. The only other thing is I would consider a 18GB Atlas 10K II, or a Seagate 15K rpm drive. If you're gonna pay for SCSI, might as well get the best...

I suggested that my boss get the 18 gig version, but he insisted that paying another $60 wasn't really worth it. I figure that he's only going to use about 4 gigs anyway. He's not exactly a "power user" but rather just evaluating the technology. I wish I had money to spend like that every few months.

He already has an Athlon 1000 and isn't too impressed with it, which is why he wants to try Intel now.

I will not be touching a Via/AMD solution for a long time... I had a KT133/T-Bird 1.1 and it was the worst system I have ever had. (I upgrade every 4 months anyway... )

Hey, no offense meant to AMD users, but until recently, the only &quot;viable&quot; choice for AMD chipsets had been VIA, and that was all that was available when the Athlon 1 Gig / A7V System was built. For some odd reason, Diablo 2 keeps crashing on that system. It's running Windows 2000 with all of the latest patches, updates, and 4-in-1's. I'm not saying that AMD or VIA is the root of the problem, but Diablo 2 does not crash on any of his other Intel P3 systems. Plus, when you have money to burn like that, why not try a P4?

Makre it an AMD. You can play games when he's not in!! hahahaha AMD athlon performs better in games isn't it?

RGN, I'm not even going to try to argue with you, I'm tired of this AMD/Intel debate.

Right now, there's no question that the best value/performance/stability is an AMD760 mobo with DDR memory and an Athlon. The sad thing is your boss is probably going to compare his new system to his old one, and think &quot;this is a great buy, this P4 is definitely faster&quot;, when the other system doesn't have all that SCSI stuff.
