It seems like I see flushes more than I see 2 pair, three of a kind, and straights, yet the flush beats them all?

Did they put the flush in the game just to annoy people or something?
 
I thought you were talking about toilets for a second. They're ranked based on probability of the event, and flushes are less common than 2 pair, 3 of a kind, and straights. I think it's just you.

I think what you are seeing is that flushes *win* more than two pair, thus skewing your viewpoint. Flushes are less mathematically common, that is why they are the higher rated hand.

I would think in a game like holdem, a straight would be much tougher to get than a flush, maybe it's just because I've been chased out too many times...
 
yeah i agree that in holdem i think straights are harder to get, because its much less likely to stay in, but probabilty if you stayed in to the end of every hand you would get more straights then flushes

Speaking of this. In poker where they play with more than one deck of cards, is it possible to get 5 aces?

a flush draw is easier to get than an open ended s8 draw... but getting s8 is easier than getting a flush

I understood it... but i thought it was STUPID.
 
Another reason it is hard to get a straight is that everyone can see what you are going for. It is much easier to risk that someone doesn't have two suited with the other cards on the board, than to risk that they only need one with 4 cards in order on the board.

And IIRC the probability for flushes is less than 2 pair, 3 of a kind, etc.
 
in texas hold em, the reason you see more flushes is more people are likely to chase them.

Observe.

I get 2 suited cards, I think "ooh, possible flush. I may play. Even if it's something like K 5"
I get 2 whatever cards like 5 7 and I think "crap".

If the board comes out with say more cards that are suited in my favor, then I end up chasing the hand. if not, then I end up looking at the relative strength of my hand and usually toss it.

Essentially, people play hands chasing flushes that they'd throw away if they were unsuited and you never get to see those little statistics. Ergo, more people chasing means more times you see the it come out.
