I saw a thing on Discovery channel where I big mantid caught a snake :Q It did finally get away from the mantid after a minute, but it got pretty messed up before it did.

Around here they get pretty big. I've seen a couple almost 25cm long, but 15ish is much more common.

No, not at all. All I did was resize them.

I wish I had some addon lenses.. lol

Nope. The A60's minimum focal distance is 5cm(2in) in macro mode.

With addon lenses, you can cut that down to 2.5cm(1in). :D I can't wait to get some.

I do wish I had a better camera, though. While the pics may look good to you guys, and they are indeed nice for 2.1mp, its limits are painfully obvious to me, and anybody else that is used to a prosumer camera, or DSLR in particular. ;)

Most all, but their degree of macro capability varies widely.

I don't think my Kodak has one...it's older, DC300 or something, I forget

Naw, I meant the youngens. Look how tiny he is. A mosquito would kick his @$$. But they eat their brothers and sisters.

For the past three years, we've had a freaken giant mantis in our front flower bed. I dunno if it's the same one and he hibernated, or it's a new one every year. Just glad it's there, taking out all the bad guys. When my wife waters the front flowers, he always climbs on the porch to get away from the water.

They'll eat anything they can. there are lots of small bugs. :)

They die about 2 weeks after laying eggs, so chances are you were just seeing grownups of a different generation.

Although, I'm not sure about the males - maybe they can overwinter?

Have you ever been bitten Eli?.........

Close enough. Davis, CA. hehee...

I estimate it to be about 3 inches long. Was weird, because I got to within like 10 inches of it and it didn't fly away. I'm guessing maybe because they resurfaced our landing the day before, maybe they painted the railings too and its stuck there. Took like 10 pictures with different settings, that one came out the best and I cropped it for web browsing.

Oh yea, I just noticed I spelled your name wrong, Eli.
