I'm looking at an opportunity to move to NY and work in the Queens area - closest to Glendale. I can live anywhere up to an hour away, though I prefer 45 minutes or less.

With one wife and two kids in elementary, what's a good area to look at? I don't care so much about big shopping and night life, I would prefer tranquil and somewhat private. $350k is likely the max I want to do on a house.

Apartment. Though even for that money it's not likely to be very big.

Where? If true I'll sell my co-op and buy a house.

I think you should get a feel for it. If you've got questions feel free to ask, as I live not too far away from Glendale (a couple of miles).

A few things to keep in mind...

- Transportation via car can be a huge PITA. This depends on where you're commuting from and commuting to, but say you get a place in Joisey and plan on getting to Queens in 45mins on a weekday morning... that ain't gon' happen. Same goes for parts of Long Island.

- Take the train if possible.

- Check out the area. In Brooklyn, you can have a hipster-douchie area and then 2 blocks away you're in the middle of the projects. Location^3

- Schooling for your cherr'ren. Some public schools are great, especially elementary and middle schools. Some schools are also crap. Keep in mind the kids might have to travel an hour+ to get to school depending on which school they go to.

- Tranquil and private exists inside the city. My area is pretty quiet yet I have a subway station 5mins walking distance and I'm also very close to anything and everything I need as far as shopping goes. The co-op is a 2 bedroom and costs roughly ~300-400k. Finding a house for that money inside the city and an equal area is nigh impossible. The houses a block from me go for 750k.

I'm looking out by Smithtown and surrounding areas. It's not likely that I'll have to drive into Queens but a couple days a week, and I don't have to do so at peak hours. My service area will basically be the entire island, so being in the center-ish is probably better for me.

How critical is it for you to drive only 45mins?

The Westbury area might work, but don't be surprised if it takes you an hour plus to get to Glendale.

If travelling to the city is a requirement for you then I'd look for a place that's closer to the city. Bear in mind that the prices go up as well as the taxes.

Long Island is very...long. If you plan on driving from end to end, you can forget about that notion. You'll be far better served with the train service.

You might also want to live closest to where you'll find yourself travelling the most frequently to. That I can't answer for you

I'm also looking for more in depth info, like suggestions on where NOT to live, or where the schools might be above average without property taxes being $12k /yr
