WASHINGTON ? Ron Kirk, nominated as U.S. Trade Representative in the Obama administration, owes an estimated $10,000 in back taxes from earlier in the decade and has agreed to make his payments, the Senate Finance Committee said Monday.

The committee said the taxes arise from Kirk's handling of speaking fees that he donated to his alma mater, and for his deduction of the full cost of season tickets to the Dallas Mavericks professional basketball team.

The disclosure made the former Dallas mayor the latest in a string of top-level Obama administration appointees found to have underpaid their taxes, following Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and Tom Daschle, who withdrew as candidate for Health and Human Services secretary. Nancy Killefer, Obama's pick for chief performance officer, also bowed out amid tax problems.

White House spokesman Ben LaBolt said Kirk was working to clear up "a few minor issues" uncovered by the committee and expressed confidence he would be confirmed.

Despite the error, Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, issued a statement calling Kirk "the right person for this job," and said he would attempt to have the nomination moved through the panel quickly.

Kirk routinely gave any speaking fees he earned to Austin College, the committee said, and did not list them on his tax returns.

Instead, the committee said he should have listed the fees as income, then claimed them as charitable donations. The estimated effect was to reduce Kirk's tax bill by an estimated $5,800, according to the report.

Kirk also deducted more than $17,000 as entertainment expenses for the cost of Mavericks' tickets. The committee said he substantiated about $9,900 of that amount, and will owe about $2,600 in taxes on the balance.

The committee said that last fall, Kirk amended his income tax return for 2006, paying an additional $2,188 in tax and $139 in interest after a notification from the Internal Revenue Service. The return was filed by a paid tax preparer, the panel added.

Here it comes again. I wonder if we can amend all the 2001-2008 deficits to include all the Obama nominees who willfully or negligently decided not to pay their 'fair share'.

Chalk another non-patriot up on the list.

Full accountability. Obama is telling people they need to get all their affairs in order before they work for him.

Did Bush even check his appointees taxes?

Absolutely. They were patriotic on their own; it didn't take a nice cushy position to make them support this country.

This is a non-issue, really. It looks bad, because of Douchle and the others, but it's really not.

For the Mavs tickets, he claimed more than he could substantiate. Either he a) lied about the value to the tune of $7,100 or b) he told the truth about the value but couldn't produce receipts for the full value. In either case, it's really very minor.

For the speaking fees, he made an understandable mistake in how the contributions were made. The money came to him and he donated it. He should have claimed it and deducted it, like the IRS said. But, if he had the fees paid directly to the school, he would not have had to claim it and deduct it. It's really a pretty minor technical issue.

Bush didn't check, and neither did Obama.

in the grand scheme of things, this isn't a big deal - but given the number of people picked for rather important positions that have similar or worse tax discrepancies, it does look bad

Our tax code is a complete and utter joke anyway - we should throw the whole thing away and start over

So many blind partisans in here. "Its okay if my party does it" attitudes prevail.

Every single person working for the government shoud be audited for the possiblility of owing back taxes. What a bunch of crooks.

And to think back when Kirk was mayor of our fair town, we had lunch, and he personally promised me he would continue to earn the public trust.
OK, to be honest here, I was at another table in the same restaurant , feeling pretty good on lunchtime margaritas, and on a dare to go bug him I walked over and grabbed his hand pumping it like some long-lost pal.
I thanked him for his loyal public service. He then promised to continue serving us well. Years later, I was with the same lunchtime friend at a local mall when we saw Kirk again. Another dare to bug him again. More hand pumping followed. I said we sure missed him as mayor, and I suggested he run for office again. So, I guess you guys can blame me for him being in D.C. now.

Then there was the time Ross Perot and I had lunch. OK, here again, he was at another table, but the two very large, humorless goons, prevented me from getting too close. No hand pumping this time.

Is not paying taxes a prerequisite for the Obama cabinet?

It makes you wonder if Obama is purposely picking these people knowing that they have tax problems.

Yeah but at the rate of his spending he will have to call out the whole Democratic party..... not everyone is as patriotic as honest Joe.

You mean she mischaracterized expenses in 2008. She didnt have tax liens from 2005.

Can you cite primary source for any of these violations? If not, don't throw stones.

WTF are you talking about? I pay my taxes. I can throw any stones I want to. Democrats apparently don't feel like they have to.

You said he knowingly abused the tax code. Do you know how complex it is? Can you cite specifically what he did wrong? I know the tax code for what he did. I know that it is VERY easy to make the mistake he did about the charitable donations. You're content to spout off on issues you have little actual knowledge of.
