A Senate committee today abruptly canceled a session to consider President Obama's nomination of Rep. Hilda Solis to be labor secretary in the wake of a report saying that her husband yesterday paid about $6,400 to settle tax liens against his business -- including liens that had been outstanding for as long as 16 years.

The report, by USA Today, came just before the Senate's Health Education Labor and Pensions Committee was slated to meet to consider Solis's nomination, which had been delayed by questions over her role on the board of the pro-labor organization American Rights at Work. A source said that committee members did not learn about the tax issue until today.

"Today's executive session was postponed to allow members additional time to review the documentation submitted in support of Representative Solis's nomination to serve in the important position of Labor Secretary," read a joint statement issued by Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.), the panel's chairman, and Mike Enzi (Wyoming), the committee's ranking Republican. "There are no holds on her nomination and members on both sides of the aisle remain committed to giving her nomination the fair and thorough consideration that she deserves. We will continue to work together to move this nomination forward as soon as possible."

No new date has been set for the hearing. The disclosure about Solis's husband comes after tax problems caused trouble for three of Obama's top appointees, leading two of them -- HHS-nominee Tom Daschle and Nancy Killefer, who was to be chief performance officer -- to withdraw.

Asked about the USA Today report at the White House daily briefing, press secretary Robert Gibbs emphasized that the nominee's tax returns are in order.

"Well, I read the story in USA Today, and it quotes somebody that works here, so obviously we've -- we know about this story. I'll say this. We reviewed her tax returns, and her tax returns are in order," said Gibbs.

"The story denotes that her husband had some issues with paying a business tax, and obviously that tax is -- should be paid. He's -- she's not a partner in that business, Gibbs continued. "So we're not going to penalize her for her husband's business mistakes. Obviously, her husband, I think, has and should pay any taxes that he owes. "

Thats 4. President Zero is hitting home runs like Bonds in 2000-2001.

And Jim Demint unleashes the zinger of the year: "I can see now why liberals don't mind if the tax rate goes up because they're not going to pay it anyway. "

You know, this is getting F'ing rediculous.

I'm all in favor of a POTUS's picks, as long as they hold reasonable qualification the field they'll be working in, being confirmed without needless nitpicking.

But, chr1st!!!

Is there anyone on Obama's team that can't manage to get their F'ing taxes straight??????

It's embarrassing at this point, as a nation...

Think about this way: Imagine all of the positions held in former administrations where presidents didn't give a flip about their honesty.

It's odd to me that no one looks at this for what it most likely is: Obama living up to his bargain of truly cleaning house. Of course, winnar's not the kind of guy to use someone's actual policy history to define them, like how cleanly he ran his various campaigns in Chicago, insuring that he was universally reviled by the typical scum that notoriously floods that political landscape.

I liked it better when we were all obsessed over nannygate.

But the way forward is now obvious, we need all Obama appointees to be people who have never earned a dime in their life, and that set is best found on the welfare roles.

Much wisdom is to be found there.

But in any and all tax disputes, the IRS is always right, and better yet, the sins of one family member is a sin of the entire democratic party.

In the case of Tom Dashel, its really hard to conceive how accepting a gift of a free car and driver, could rack up $150,000 in tax liabilities. But God knows how the IRS came up with that one.

Hilda Solis didn't have any back taxes; her husband's business did. Did you read the article?

(Car + driver)*3 years worth + tax he didn't pay for consulting in 2007 + charitable donations that weren't allowed + interest + penalties.

Yea, $150k sounds right.

This is "original commentary"? Two bad one-liners?

BTW, who is nominated for labor secretary, Hilda Solis or her husband?

LOL this is great.

Yes let's have him vet all the dems is the Senate and House.

Perhaps if all these Democrats would pay their taxes we may be able to fund the stimulas bill.

The bigger questions is who pays or doesn't pay their taxes.

Hey I'm sure it was another "honest" mistake, jails are full of people that make "honest" mistakes.

Is that the question?

The answer is Hilda Solis did pay her taxes. Nowhere in the OP does it say otherwise.

This makes you wonder what "Honest Joe Biden" is thinking.

Joe said that paying taxes makes you patriotic, I guess we are seeing that the Democratic party isn't as patriotic as he thought.

Why would she sign her husband's business tax return if she's not a partner?

This was her husband's business, she's not a partner. And he has settled the tax lien.

Why would she sign her husband's business tax return if she's not a partner?

If it's a S-corp or partnership, he gets a K-1. Goes on Sch. E on their personal return. They can't file their personal return until she signs it. Both parties are responsible.

She can't claim "I didn't know."

Innocent Spouse Relief isn't going to cut it on something like that.

It's how the IRS would handle it with anyone else.
