I said he was over-rated when he came here. Everyone laughed at me, I kept saying he was soft, injury prone, and even up to this season, has had great flashes, but can't stay healthy. I don't see this as a big loss. It's not like he was ever healthy come playoff time.
Over-rated? Most people were saying he was going to be a bust (Shawn Bradley 2.0) yet he became a perennial all-star, so how is that over-rated? Soft? See Tim Duncan, he has rings. Injury Prone? Yes, he is injury prone.
Yes, Yao Ming was/is overrated. He was hailed as the "next great big man" and didn't even come close to living up to that.
When he started he was soft and got dominated by most shorter big men. He was finally starting to play well over the past couple seasons, but in no way did he live up to the hype.
(and a hint, he was a "perennial all-star" because there about 19 billion people in China who voted him in every year)
Next great big man? All the articles I've read before the draft was that he has bust potential all over. Charles Barkley said he would kiss a donkey's ass if Yao ever scored 20 points and Dick Vitale said he's going to be the biggest bust in history. I've never read anything about him being the next big great man before being drafted, he was actually underrated from what the pundits said.
He was the #1 pick, that is hype enough.
So he wasn't a massive bust, he was still a bust. Making an all-star team != being a star player
So how many centers during Yao's time in the league was better than him? You could argue Shaq and that's about it (Tim Duncan is a PF). So 7 years giving you top production or near it for 7 years = bust? Kwame Brown / Darko Milicic are busts, Yao is far from it.
He was an average player and the past couple years above average. That does not warrant a #1 pick in my book
And centers just as good if not better: Shaq, Wallace, Camby, Miller
