I said he was over-rated when he came here. Everyone laughed at me, I kept saying he was soft, injury prone, and even up to this season, has had great flashes, but can't stay healthy. I don't see this as a big loss. It's not like he was ever healthy come playoff time.

Over-rated? Most people were saying he was going to be a bust (Shawn Bradley 2.0) yet he became a perennial all-star, so how is that over-rated? Soft? See Tim Duncan, he has rings. Injury Prone? Yes, he is injury prone.

Yes, Yao Ming was/is overrated. He was hailed as the "next great big man" and didn't even come close to living up to that.

When he started he was soft and got dominated by most shorter big men. He was finally starting to play well over the past couple seasons, but in no way did he live up to the hype.

(and a hint, he was a "perennial all-star" because there about 19 billion people in China who voted him in every year)

Next great big man? All the articles I've read before the draft was that he has bust potential all over. Charles Barkley said he would kiss a donkey's ass if Yao ever scored 20 points and Dick Vitale said he's going to be the biggest bust in history. I've never read anything about him being the next big great man before being drafted, he was actually underrated from what the pundits said.

He was the #1 pick, that is hype enough.

So he wasn't a massive bust, he was still a bust. Making an all-star team != being a star player

So how many centers during Yao's time in the league was better than him? You could argue Shaq and that's about it (Tim Duncan is a PF). So 7 years giving you top production or near it for 7 years = bust? Kwame Brown / Darko Milicic are busts, Yao is far from it.

He was an average player and the past couple years above average. That does not warrant a #1 pick in my book

And centers just as good if not better: Shaq, Wallace, Camby, Miller

You must get upset about this often then, because there are a LOT of #1 draft picks who turned out to be vastly inferior to Yao even. Andrew Bogut, Kwame Brown, Olowakandi come to mind...

Please quote me saying those guys are any good. He was a number 1 pick who has been at most an average to slightly above average NBA player who gets injured every season.....otherwise known as a bust.

Its cool, I just didn't know your criteria for being a superstar NBA center is being better than Kwami Brown

It's not. Again, I refer you to my post. It was only two sentences and yet you fail to understand my point at even a most basic level. You didn't actually follow my suggestion of reading it 10 times, did you? Are you under the impression that I posted anything except that two sentence post before you quoted me?

You implied I "get upset about this often"....bringing up the other scrub #1 picks, which all have nothing to do with Yao Ming or really anything I stated.

I could see your point if maybe I had said, I dunno, anything about those fucking guys. But I didn't. We are talking about Yao Ming. Is he better than those guys? Yes. Does that have absolutely anything to do with Yao or somehow not make him a bust? Nope. But congrats anyway, you are truly an e-witty master.

I didn't imply that, I directly stated it. Do you want me to bold it or shall we have a 3-5 post sequence debating that too?

How silly of me to think that the relative success of other #1 draft picks has anything to do with assessing whether this particular #1 draft pick has been successful. That is like comparing apples to apples - who would do such a thing? Crazy.

Since Yao entered the league:
Yao Ming: 19.1 ppg, 9.3 rpg, .525% fg, 1.9 bpg
Ben Wallace: 8.1 ppg, 10.9 rpg, .450% fg, 2.2 bpg
Marcus Camby: 9.9 ppg, 10.7 rpg, .464% fg, 1.0 bpg
Brad Miller: 13.1 ppg, 8.4 rpg, .487% fg, 0.8 bpg
Rasheed Wallace (more a 4 than a 5) : 14.38 ppg, 7.2 rpg, .435% fg, 1.5 bpg

yao's made an all nba team 5 times in his career. there aren't many players in the history of the nba who can claim that. ewing made it 7 times as a number one pick and he had just as much hype coming into the league. had yao been able to play another 2-3 seasons, he would've easily reached that total.

obviously yao isnt in the class as shaq, david robinson, or hakeem, but he's no bust by any standard.

Agreed all around. Too much of a genetic freak though, there was no way he was going to hold up for a long career, but if this holds true, it's way shorter than I expected. :(

Funny story. At one of the hotels we were staying at in China they had a women's basketball team staying as well. Most of these girls were taller than I am (6'1ish). Some were significantly taller! In China that's TALL for a woman!!

Chinese officials are saying that it's all a ploy by the Rockets to lower Yao's contract offer.

Heh.

I'm picturing a scene from The Office when some of the guys go clubbing with a women's basketball team. Good times!

It will be interesting to see how things play out between the NBA/teams and the various countries. That makes two guys from the same state (Yao and Ginobili) that have played essentially year round on the international and NBA circuit.

I wonder just how much leverage the NBA can apply to these types of players. I don't know the whole history on Yao and how China treats it's players, but it's almost like China acts as if it's doing the NBA a favor letting Yao play in the NBA. His "real" job is playing for their international team.

Ginobili seemed like he had a little more free will in his playing for Argentina but his pride more or less fueled him through those summer games.

But I'm just intrigued to see how far the NBA will go to protect it's assets.

Kobe played a summer qualifying tournement, then went all the way to game 6 in the finals in a loss to Boston, then played on the US team in China all the way to a gold medal, then went all the way into the playoffs and won in 6 in the finals.

That is a lot of extra basketball with almost no time off. I dont want to hear the Yao or Manu crowd crying.

Yao was just coming into his own in the NBA it seems. He really impressed me in the playoffs this year.

i know you want to cradle kobes balls every chance you get but yao is 7'6. why are you comparing him to kobe?
