So I live in an apartment complex, and apparently the walls are paper thin, because my neighbor has complained about me playing music too loudly. I know I'm playing counter-strike with my speakers, but considering my roommate in the next room can't hear it, I'm pretty sure my speakers aren't too loud. So the question is...
Is it wrong for me to have my speakers at a reasonable volume, even though they can hear it, or should I use my broken head phones?

EDIT: This is between the daylight hours. At night I use the headphones, ~10pm.

Are your speakers against the wall that separates your apartments? If so, it may be almost as loud on his side as it is on yours.

Turn your bass down at least.. that travels pretty far. Your roommate may not be bothered by it, but it may be quite annoying to the neighbors.

Play some music and go outside and see if you can hear the bass. I remember when I lived on campus many years ago, I played some music on my Z680s in my room and the bass didn't seem that loud, but if I went down the hall to the laundry room I could feel it in there :Q

Though I'm not doing it here, but when I lived in the dorms I lived on the top floor in a corner room. I would play THIS and turn my z680s to about 3/4ths the way up. I concluded that about 32 rooms were able to hear me play that. Atleast they could 5 rooms down the hall and 3 floors down.
I was such an ass.

Just have some respect for your neighbors. I don't know if they complained directly to you or not, but it is obviously a problem for them. If they complained to you first, then at least they have the courtesy of trying to resolve the problem face to face without resorting to trying to have you charged with a noise violation (obviously such noise violations depend on the terms of your lease and local laws so I can't say much more about it).

They DIDN'T come to me first. They already complained to management. We got a notice in out bill this month, it was only today that they came over and complained at me.

Either way, it must be loud/annoying enough to warrant a complaint. Just keep it down... like I said it's probably just the bass. I completely turn the bass off on my Z680s in my current apartment at night and keep it low during the day.

A poster in here is right it might not bother you, but the bass travles far and can be annyoing. One of my old roommates did that to the whole house, it wasnt too bad in his room, but shook the whole damn house apart.

Mine is the exact opposite. The bass is almost overwhelming in my bedroom, but in my front room, or the mudroom, it's only a slight rumble.

Man, I miss living in my old townhome and having stereo wars with the rap listener next door

Bass will carry very well. Even if the overall sound level doesn't seem too high to you, the bass can still make it through walls quite effectively. Maybe see if you can adjust your speakers or soundcard to filter out the low-end frequencies, maybe 300Hz and lower.
