YAMT: To value ram or not....

before anything...here's my sys spec:
A64 3700 San Diego
2x512 OCZ PC3200 @ 2-3-3-6 stock
x800xl
36gb raptor

need to upgrade for good BF2 performance.

this is what i've gathered from reading a lot of the threads on here:

+ for A64...running 2T isn't significantly slower than running 1T
+ even the cheapest ram at the slowest CAS latency wont be significantly slower than the higher priced pc3200.

my two options are:
1.) buy another set of OCZ 512x2 ram and run 2T
2.) sell the OCZ and buy 2x1GB of value ram

what are your thoughts guys?

thanks for your help everyone🙂

edit: wont be doing any OC of any sort with the proc or mem for the most part

Can't go wrong with Option 2. If you can afford both options, definitely go with Nr. 2. Of course, this will cost you more.

Mine runs it with settings on medium very nicely

What I said was misleading. The game does run alright but having 2GB significantly helps with map loading times. Not to mention, once I'm in the game, the first minute or two, as I'm flying throughout the map the game still lags as the map is loaded from the HD to the RAM or the Page File.

P.S. YGPM in regards to the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in 5.1 HD 😀😀

What if I threw in option 3: buy either a 512x2 or 1x1gb value ram and stick it with the OCZ i have now. would it bring about incompatibility?

Im looking for the cheaper option.

You can go this route also. Since this will keep another option open. And that is, if there is a compatibility problem after adding a 1 X 1Gb ram stick, then go ahead and sell the 2 X 512MB sticks and buy another 1 GB stick.

If you can go for the 2x1gb value RAM then go for it, but it's not worth breaking a sweat over. Either way you'll see a performance increase. I would avoid your option 3, because while A64s don't mind not running in dual channel and don't mind 2T timings they would start to add up.

here's what im thinking so far.
sell the ocz and get ~100 from it
apply that + another 60 or so and pick up a 2x1gb kit

g.skill 2x1gb

anyone have any particular reccomendation for the memory? i've used PDP, OCZ & Mushkin always so i dont know about geil and g.skill and such.

if im going from CAS 2(current ram) to CAS 2.5 or 3(cheap 2gb kit), will i notice much of a difference in gaming? and basic computing?

thanks again for all your help guys

I just got another gig of corsair vs. Its great with the 2x256 I had. Still running dual channel with a 2.66 p4. Loads the maps in about 60 seconds. No lag after starting that I can tell.

Its fine. Honestly the difference between 1T and 2T is pretty small, and in BF2 you will not notice a difference. You'd have to benchmark a bunch to find a difference.

I'm running single channel and 2T, AND slowest timings. My memory sucks, but with 1.75GB at the moment, thats what matters most. BF2 ran fine with 1GB ram, it was the other parts of my system that were slow. Now I run 1680x1050, all high details, 4x AA, 8x AF, and it seems much smoother than my previous! So when you get your games running like this, the last thing on your mind is some stupid command rate, IMO.

Here's my memory progression:
2x512 & 2x256 - Not completely stable
2x512 & 1x1GB - Lost dual channel - Sold the 2x512
End of this week:
2x1GB - what I should've had to start with 😛

All of this is with value ram, btw.

I agree, option two is better.

very well put.
now i will just have to decide what the cheapest way to go about this would be.
1GB stick....or 2x512....

i suppose i should go with 1gb since its cheaper. i'll have to check in FS/FT forum to see if i can find some good memory.

A fast hard drive is better for Battlefield 2. I have 512MB and a fast hard drive. My PC133 gets me on the server before most people that have 1024MB DDR. I know because they asked me what I had to be on of the first five on the server every time.

well i have a 36gb raptor w/ the BF2 program on it and a 120gb IDE that has the page file.
so i know thats not the problem.
i just feel that the game will run better with 2gb.
that should cut down on the significant amount of disk swapping that goes on while i play.

I did forget to mention that I have two drives installed, both are 7k250. On Drive C:\ I have Windows 2000 and the Game Installed. On Drive D:\ I have Daemon Tools with the BF2 CD and 2GB page File installed.

By separating them I have noticed a nice boost in load times. Especially since I do not rely on the CD-ROM any more for certain files.

I, too, have a 2GB page file on the 120GB IDE. I didn't bother with the BF2 CD image and using DT since the CD is only accessed in the begining for all that safedisc verification purposes.

In BF2, i had noticed when i opened up task manager than the bf2.exe file was ~650mb. add in another ~200mb for windows and its pretty close to the GB mark. i'm hoping the 2gb will help.
