I thought some of the yamaha had features to record better audio cds, maybe that was an older drive. that might somewhat justify the price to someone who makes a lot of audio cds who cares about quality

dew.

Well, my Yamaha 6416S (SCSI) is still burnin' strong, after about three years. The fellow that was working at the CompUSA where I purchased a 40X MAXX burner for someone else (who's CD-ROM failed, so I suggested replacing it with a burner, given today's low prices), mentioned that he still had an 8X Yamaha SCSI burner that was working, too.

Good, high-quality, welll-built drives actually last a long time. Ask how many people who own Plextor 12x4x32 SCSI CD-RW drives still have them and use them. I'll bet over 95% of them. Probably closer to 99% or even 100%.

Perhaps lite-ons don't have the greatest build quality, but being able to flash a 24X to a 40X is very very cool =P

I got a TDK 48X CDRW, but I think I'm trading this one in for the Yamaha. It's seems way impressive. I got my TDK for cheap anyways. The Bestbuy cashier messed up and rang me up for a pack of CDR's.

I'll buy your TDK off of you for a pack of CD-R's! :) Actually PM me a price if you want to sell it.

I think that you are slightly confused. It is not possible to flash a Lite-On (or any other brand/mfg) CD-RW drive from 24X to 40X, according to all that I've read so far. Only the 32X and up drives share the same chipset/mechanism, and can be upgraded as high as 48X. The 24X drives used an older chipset/mechanism. (I would like to hear about any exceptions to this.)
