Yamaha CRW-F1 problems

I hate my new CRW-F1 recorder. I have only burned 3 discs and I want my Yamaha CRW3200 back. If I use my CRW-F1 for ripping a cd or to copy a disc image, it will peg my cpu, and pretty much make my computer useless until it is finished. When I burn a disc (I have only been buring @ 4x - burning some music) it SEVERLY hinders my system performance, not on the cpu but on the system bus (as the task manager does not indicate high cpu usage, but things get a little choppy). I can?t play music because it makes my mp3's skip, and it slows down anything I am running. I NEVER had this performance loss on my old system (XP1600, K7 Master Mobo, 512MB PC266, CRW3200, Win2K) but this is just disgusting. This is my new setup: XP2000+, 512MB pc333, KT3 Ultra2 Mobo, CRW-F1, WInXP Pro. Besides from the parts listed, all other parts in my computer are the same. (dvd, 40gb maxtor, sblive 5.1) does anyone have any idea as to what might be causing my system to bog this bad. I mean my p2 450 with 2x burner and 384 mb of ram will perform better when burning a disc. PLEASE PLEASE any ideas would be great.

(disgruntled) bagaki

PLEASE NOTE: i have used winXP with my previous configuation (XP1600+) and it worked smooth. I use Nero 5.5.9.14 and EAC 0.9b4 with LAME 3.92 for ripping. Everything is set to DMA mode and i use the SAME software and all the same system settings.

Hmmm... mine is working fine... *knock on wood* the only thing it slows down in is detecting itself in the bios settings... boot up and normal operation is fine though... what else do you have on that channel?

You said that "it will peg my cpu", but "not on the cpu but on the system bus." It's hard to offer suggestions when your symptoms contradict themselves.

It sounds like a DMA issue to me, you sure DMA is enabled?

[Edit: I would like to add, that I have a friend with this burner and he loves it. I wasn't impressed with the ease of reading the labels it puts on. However, he
burned my girlfriend a purple CD with the label along the edge and she likes the CD.]

well, upon re-checking my settings for my ide controller, i have confirmed that it is running in PIO mode. This would explain the problems. but here is the new problem, how do i get it out of PIO mode. I put it in PIO mode when i flashed the bios (bios of the CDRW - it told me to do this), and after i flashed, i set it back to DMA is available. I Assumed it went back to DMA mode without checking. It did not. I have restarted the computer 4 times now, and i dont know how to get it back into DMA mode. i looking in the bios, but did not find anything... i will re-check.

i appologize for being sloppy and not double checking, which would have saved the initial post.

So in Windows device manager if you select your "Secondary IDE Channel" -> Properties -> Advanced Settings. What does it show for Device 1 "Current Transfer Mode"?

Go to device manager and uninstall the IDE channel it is on. Restart windows and have it reinstall the IDE channel.
