An al-Qaida commander in Iraq close to Osama bin Laden warns of an imminent massive attack against the U.S. designed to kill as many as 100,000 people.

A leader who identifies himself as Abu Salma Al-Hijazi said in an interview posted on al-Qal'a ? "The Fortress" ? an Islamist Internet forum, "a huge and very courageous strike" has been planned, reports the Washington, D.C.-based Middle East Media Research Institute, or MEMRI.

The attack, which he anticipates during the current month-long Muslim observance of Ramadan, will "amaze the world and turn al-Qaida into [an organization that] horrifies the world until the law of Allah is implemented, actually implemented, and not just in words, on his land. ?"

Al-Hijazi vowed, "You wait and see that the balance of power between al-Qaida and its rivals will change, all of a sudden, Allah willing."

The interview, according to the article, took place in Iraq, south of Faluja, with five masked men carrying missiles and personal weapons surrounding al-Hijazi.

Al-Hijazi said al-Qaida is keeping an eye on detainees held by coalition forces.

"We follow their situation closely. ... The collaborating governments will pay the price for capturing these heroes who want to revive the glory of their nation and shake off the dust of humiliation and disgrace," he said.

He added the "collaborating and treacherous" governments should know al-Qaida has a long reach, and its members enjoy popularity that will not end just because apostate governments detain hundreds of al-Qaida members.

"As soon as the governments detain one of our people, ten like him join us. ... This is no secret," he said.

More rightwingers trying to scare Americans into giving up our freedoms for homeland security. WND should find WMD in Iraq first before I believe their propaganda scare tactics. :D

I hate to prolong this thread, but what a bunch of horse barf. This is appears to be the standard batch of Arab bull pucky, so good for growing roses. First we've got a major Al Queda guy in Iraq. Nobody ever heard of this guy, but that's OK. Why would a major Al Queda guy be in such a risky place? But that's OK. Second, he gives a news conference surrounded by five guys with rifles and missles. Missles? What is this, a James Bond flick? If they were our missles, or the missles of any other advanced industrial country, they have to fly a certain distance before arming. They are useless for personal defense but impressive for news conferences with gullible reporters. I also loved the part about 27 Lebanese Christian torturers. How did they get there? Did we run a want ad? "27 torturers wanted, must be willing to travel and work long hours. Salary negotiable."

I think a big possibility is a "dirty bomb." Probably wouldn't take a kg of some of the worse radioactive elements/isotopes to do some real economic damage. The risk of cancer in would probably go up a couple % but there could be a panic and the city would be economically devistated. Did anyone elese see the show about this on Discovery. Caesium chloride from Soviet seed irradiators or hell even radioactive cobalt from an x-ray machine.

Either they have a nuclear weapon, or they are full of doo doo

Even a dirty bomb wouldn't kill 100,000

I'm going with the Former. They usually are full of doo doo.

Just remember that this thread came about Thanksgiving time. In June I'll bring it up again. I'll either be crowing like a rooster or pecking like a chicken. What a crock. Hey, Dahunan, I know you're just reporting the news, but did you know that "gullible" isn't in the dictionary?

of course a dirty bomb wouldn't kill 100,000 you could be killed by the 100lbs. of explosives they use to spread whatever they were using over a pretty good distance. Unless it was plutonium it would kill hardly anybody right away. You could have a good section of a city become pretty quiet as every buisness/resident moved away. Because it would be senstionalized by the news even if it was a really small. "If you move then the terrorists have won" probably wouldn't work in that situation.

Without going into too much detail let me assure you there are no cobalt x-ray machines. An x-ray "machine" generates radiation through an electircal process, whereas cobalt is used as a "source". A source is a tiny bit of material that is made inherently radioactive and must be shielded at all times. An x-ray machine stops producing radiation the second it is turned off. Blowing up an x-ray machine would be no more radiogically devastating than blowing up a sewing machine......

With a proper generator and equipment you could put a high energy machine, something in the million volt plus range, into a box on the back of a semi-rig and deliver a pinpoint fatal dose of radiation in less than a minute.

Why would they need to attack the U.S. in that manner? They got us right where they want us in Iraq. If they attack and kill 100,000 people just think what backlash that would have. You saw the world support the U.S had after 9/11 (which unforutanletly has eroded). We may be spread thin troopwise now, but after something like that happened the military probably could not train recruits fast enough.

Al-7,

They refered to blowing up an X-Ray machine, whereas they ment a Clinical Radiation source that would be used
for Cancer treatment, etc. - the Cobalt 60 is doubtfull but the Cesium 137 is more likely, not as well guarded.

Eitherthough is obtainable, Mexico has had scrap disposal problems with this equipment for years,
and you can bet that third world countries are even less control wise than Mexico.
