I had second round of interview with Schlumberger....I fared well through all four interviews and had a good technical presentation (other two guys who were with me presented some bull crap about their class projects which was not even technical, and slides were so messy).

One of the guys was from Ivy League School, doing his MS in Mechanical Engineering and was asking stupid questions all the time, for example, night before interviews they took us out for dinner and he was asking about advice to start his own business.

Other guy was ok another OK school with just good football program in Oklahoma, he was MBA with Mechanical Engineering with 1 yr work ex.

I am doing my Ph D in Engineering.

----

I think they kissed Ivy League's butt even though he knew nothing about the job we were interviewing for!!!

I am so pissed right now about all the show they put during the interview. I have no idea what went wrong!!!! :|:(

----

Cliffs:
1- Had very good interview and technical presentation
2- Other guys were from better school (one from Ivy League) with virtually no knowledge about the job we were interviewing for
3- Rejection in second round :|
4- No idea what went wrong!

Sometimes, it is less about technical performance, but rather about personality and "selling" yourself to a person

Largest Oil Field Service Company Text

Heh. They bought the first company I worked for (Sema) out of a favor to the owner even though Sema had few compatible businesses. They then laid off a good chunk of the workforce and sold the business section that I worked in to another company.

lesson learned?

Can't be dumb, can't be too much assertive, can't be too much submissive, can't be too much confident but still hope that they like you as a person.

BTW, you probably interviewed right next to where I live :p

I had a friend who worked for Schlumberger. He went to MIT, and now is in Harvard. Maybe Ivy League somehow gives more warrant to someone's resume in their book. But chances are they liked the guy's ability to take charge and ask questions no matter how stupid it may have seemed to you. Chances are the people who were interviewing were not all technical and more management and thought the guy's questions were insightful and forward thinking, and that his go-get-'em attitude was exactly what they wanted.

Sorry, but with this pompous attitude, you deserve to be knocked off your high horse.

edit - Maybe a little humility will help fix your attitude.

That's not pompus attitude, "You are over-qualified' is the most common reason I have ever heard. Employers need to pay certain amount to qualified candidate when sponsoring visas or it may look like a shody employment. That's the reason they usually check educational background thoroughly even though candidate is fit for job.

If you don't know whole background for this story, don't pitch in your opinion.

I'm not just basing your pompous attitude just based on your over qualified comment. It's also the OP. You knocked the other candidates class projects just proves it. Umm, they made it was far as you bud. So their qualifications are just as good as yours. And since I would have to assume one of them got the job, they were BETTER than you. So it just goes to show that you're not as good that you really think you are.

And just because you don't like my comment, it doesn't make my opinion any less important than yours dumbass.

Exactly. If you're PhD and interviewing with MS students they may well not want to pay you PhD salary.

Most of the time, if you are in for an interview, you are good enough. Everyone there is qualified. There is much more to being a good employee than just intelligence.
